4th Generation 1997 V6 clutch replacement - how much?

I know I asked this question a while back, but not sure I got an answer.

My car has ~125k miles and the original clutch, and its finally starting to get bad. Slipping, especially in 5th gear (put your foot down, engines spins up to about 4500 RPMs, then it starts to grab and settles at about 3000 RPMs).

In your experience, what should I expect to pay a shop to do the job? What parts or work is there (I know there are a few pieces as part of a kit, any other work)?

I heard somewhere north of $500, is that accurate?

Thanks!

yup...well north of 500 just for the labor, probably around there for an outside shop, probably closer to 700-800 for a dealership

then the final price will depend on what parts you want for your clutch- oem, aftermarket, performance, etc,

go to your local toyota dealership ask them for the clutch kit for your car should include clutch & pressure plate. so i'd say $2-300 for the kit (est) and labor is gonna be a pretty penny because gettin the clutch out of a v6 5spd aint easy. i'd say $500 is a good estimation.

the clutch kit should be something like this

Clutch kits come with everything needed, but a shop will highly recommend (as will I) seals and possibly getting your flywheel machined, if feasible.

The seals are maybe 10 bucks.

Flywheel being machined was about 50 bucks when I had it done.

If your flywheel needs replacing, I think they are pretty expensive.

Thanks guys.

For the flywheel, is it common it needs to be resurfaced? Why does it get messed up?

to do the clutch in a V6, essentially involves dropping the subframe, that alone would cost a few hundred of it all, I'd say about $1000 job conservatively.

as far as the flywheel, fairly cheap to replaced if you are uneasy about resurfacing

i did a DIY gen 3, 4cyl and gen4 v6 clutch swap with out droppping the subframe, enough room to separate tranny and slide it to the side to get the clutch work done.

i even did a tranny replacement on my 4cyl manual transmission with out dropping the subframe, just lucky, turn the larger side toward front, and then rotate sideway and drop to floor slowly.

i did asked the shop 2 or 3 years ago on a 4cyl clutch before i decided to do it myself, and the shop said around $500 part and labor as well.

looking at DIY 10 to 20 labor hours, clutch kit, rear main seal, cv axle seals around $200 OEM parts.

main reason to resurface flywheel friction area may become uneven due to friction wear from clutch disc, if you dont resurface the worn flywheel when installing new clutch, the clutch disc may wear out prematurely.

technically all you need to do is get some rough sandpaper and scuff up the flywheel and your good to go.
