3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 1994 Toyota Camry I4 2.2 L with 96k. I have just done a major rebuilt on it with the overhaul kit replace rod and main bearing with correct part#'s all from Toyota. I had have taken the head out and have the valve job done at a machine shop, I'm wondering if valve clearance could cause this problem. I've also replace spark plug wires, cap rotor, and spark plugs. When the car starts up it's fine on idle once it gets hot the engine starts to want to stall. When driving taking off is fine, driving on the highway is fine, just when I come to a stop light it starts to want to stall again. Once I finally get into my driveway it wants to stall and eventually in the end it stalls. I have recheck timing many times everything is correct. Driving is all fine just when the car is warm it wants to stall at a stop. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate your help. Thanks.
Are the compression even in all cylinders? If they are your engine is probably not the cause. I would suggest start at checking your ground connection, make sure they are all clean and tight. Next check your IAC, test it to see if it is working properly. If that checks OK, check your ECT, make sure it is sending the correct output to the ECM.
It sounds suspiciously like what I've been dealing with the past several months.
When the car is cold, it doesn't do this, but when it's warm, it doesn't idle that great. When doing highway speeds or close it and coming to a stop, the rpm's drop really low and almost stalls [sometimes it does].
I cleaned my IAC out, which helped a wee bit, but didn't get rid of the problem. I was thinking EGR, so got what seemed to be a fairly good one from the wreckers to try and play with. Cleaned it all up, and the where it mounts to the plenum. Think it made a difference in general, but still was acting funny. Re-adjusted my MAF and seemed to improve a lot. [my MAF is leaned out] Now after a day or so of driving, I guess for the ECM to re-adjust to what I changed, the car is now running perfectly and idling without issue.
I'm no expert, but I would say from what I've read on here is clean the IAC out and take a good look to see if the EGR is working properly. From what I've been reading here and other sources, if the EGR isn't working properly it can cause the stalling symptoms and cause bad idling.
Good luck!
[interesting to note though is my EGR looked like it was fairly new and changed out in the last year or so. As well while looking at different engines at the wreckers, I found some that the EGR was actually having some of the tubes blocked up by carbon deposits]
My camry does this too after driving on the highway with the a/c on. But if I don't have the a/c on its ok. I would also like to know what is causing this, it gets annoying in the summer.
Thank you for the replies. I took the car to the dealer they cleaned out the IAC but it didn't solve the probem they were charging about 690 for a new distributor because they say that it is misfiring. I told them i'll just take the car home. Now I'm going to get a new distributor and install it and see how it goes from Advance Auto.
Yeah might be. I still have to return the old one for the core yet. I have a question N.E.O is there any way to quiet down the lifters? After I had the machine shop do a valve job it seems to be quieter but is there any way to make it even more quieter?
What type of noise is it making? Are you positive that it is the lifters? The balance shaft in the oil pan can be pretty noisy if the clearance is not set properly. The timing belt can also make noise to if there is a little too much play, rattle against the timing cover.
Can't be the timing belt i changed that with new tensioner while rebuilding the engine. Yes im sure it's the lifters, I left the balance shafts alone and just but it back on time after i rebuilt the engine. It's not a big issue though, but when my dad owned the car it was even louder, after the rebuid and valve job much more quieter. There was a time before about a year ago the timing belt was rubbing the cover and i changed the timing belt and tensioner and that problem went away

Well, see if you can narrow down the area where it is the loudest. The valves on the 5sfe are usually pretty quiet if the clearance is adjusted properly, compare with the other two.
Yeah i did check the clearance, all the clearances are in spec. So, I'm thinking it's normal, my uncle believes it's possible to narrow it down more and only hear exhaust noise but I never thought Toyota's would be that quiet. What chu think N.E.O?
