3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
why do i only get 18 mpg on my 96 camry 4cyl. i changed the plugs and put in ngk, changed the cap and rotor and wires.had the head rebuilt also because the gasket was blown. everything is pretty much running good, just dont get 23 mpg like i should. anybody know what could be wrong?
i just pulled the plugs and gap is correct at .044, so that eliminates the plugs, wires are new, rotor and cap also new, when i changed the oil the air filter looked pretty good so i did not change it. maby pcv valve?
What type of driving do you do mostly? Highway or city? Stop and go traffic? How is your transmission shifting, correct shift point or late?
There are different factors which would affect fuel mileage as it was noted in the earlier post. Why don't you give us a little bit of information about how you use your car? Maybe, then we can give you some suggestion on how you can improve on your fuel mileage.
how long has it been since your timing belt was replaced?
your fuel filter?
what about your tranny fluid and filter and the fluid in the differential. are they good?
check your tire pressure.
are you hard on the gas and rev to 6000 rpm's before it shifts?
all of those can affect gas mileage
launching the car from a stop light is bad.
Harsh breaking is bad.
Basically any time you press on the brakes then hit the gas is bad. Its all about being a SMOOTH driver. Dont brake if you dont need to but also break very slowly. Same with accelerating.
Honestly its amazing to me how many people out their suck at driving. I cant count how many times i see a car speed, pass me, then slam on the breaks. Its like the person doesnt even realize their is a red light.

er, i meant clean injectors, and right pressure
throw a can of seafoam in at your next fill up, should clean out most of your fuel system if it isn't already
wouldn't be a bad idea to change your fuel filter around then too
Where did you get this figure? I believe your car was rated at 21 city and 28 highway, the same as my 94 5SFE 4 cylinder engine. I live in the northwest burbs and rarely go in to the city and I average around 20 MPG, so your mileage doesn't sound unrealistic if you drive mostly in the city itself.
A couple of more things to add to what the other's have suggested that effects fuel mileage. Short trip driving will lower fuel mileage as the engine rarely reaches operating temperature, where you get your best mileage. Also, check your engine coolant temperature sensor for being out of range. It could be telling the computer that the car is always running cooler than it actually is. This will increase fuel consumption. In addition your thermostat could be opening late, increasing warmup time and hurting mileage. Last thing to check would be for any brake drag. Jack up each wheel and see if they spin freely.
