Help: A/C stuck on in 1998 Camry

HI,

When I turned the heater on, I noticed my A/C light was on, so I pressed the A/C button to turn it off. This had no effect.

As soon as I turn my fan on, the A/C light goes on and my compressor kicks on too.

Any suggestion would be really appreciated.

Thanks,
Jason

Are you in front defrost mode? I think the compressor will stay on if you are in front defrost mode.

it's likely a bad button (ie, shorted) or some sort of short on the HVAC control cluster since the A/C shuts off with the fan. Maybe try to pull one of the wires from the back of that switch and see if it stays off.

but will the A/C light actually come on for defrost mode? If it usually doesn't, that's why I would think it is the switch.

It was in front defrost mode. In any other mode, the A/C light doesn't come on.

Is it normal to stay on with front defrost mode? If so, why?

Thanks for the help,
Jason

Toyota had changed the A/C compressor operation a few times over the years, and no one really seem to have a good handle on which year is linked with the front defroster and which year isn't. For some years, it is normal for the compressor to come on to help clear up the windshield, while in the other years, you can turn the compressor off with the switch. The reasoning from what I can understand is the A/C dries the air entering the vehicle so it will have less chance of fogging up the windshield.

Thanks, makes sense about drying the air.

This forum is awesome!
