HOW tight are those head bolts ?
Okay I have spent hours stripping the motor, the 4 cyl variety which is nestled inconveniently allll the way back by the firewall, (1993 4cyl) - and its time to progressively loosen head bolts. (I am replacing a blown head gasket) The first is a front bolt, breaks loose as expected, soon after is one of the rear bolts, I think the one under the distributor shaft, its tight as CRAP.... I try another rear bolt, at the opposite end of the engine, also real tight. I try one more front bolt, breaks loose as I'd expect. Now I doan want to damage the head with incorrect loosening, so I stop. I have a 2' breaker bar on these puppies, and I guess I'm putting about 150+ ft lbs on them, and they are NOT breaking loose. I am a little paranoid about snapping something off (this job has been nothing but a royal pain in the azzz, so I can see that happening!). DO I just push it harder, do I put a torch to it (and that concerns me, localized heating like that and warpage, etc) - again, I just don't know how this head is 'supposed' to come off. Seeking advice. And as I said, I'm a bit puzzled two front bolts attempted broke loose pretty easy, and two rears have taken over twice the force and remain tight....
thanks,
