Ease off gas pedal - Transmission

96 I-4 slushbox,180000 plus

Hello,
This is something that I noticed just recently.

I was doing about 65 and I had the step off the gas rather abruptly to get my foot on the brake. This caused a very visible shock through the entire car and I tried the same thing a couple of times and it is quite repeatable. Is this normal?

Please note that I have the throttle cable adjusted for snappier shifts(heard it was less wear on an older transmission). The 3-4 shift is quite hard, but others are ok.

I have had issues earlier with the lockup solenoid malfunction ,but they went away on a reset...
Im not throwing any codes now .Fluid is pink-brown.Levels are good.
Any suggestions?

Thanks,
keba

Hello, Did you ever find out what the problem was? I have the same issue on my car and it has been going on for a while now. The only difference is that I did not adjust the shift cable. No codes stored.

Reading the troubleshooting steps on the service manual, it seems like there is no lockup. But that is as far as I can tell. i dont know anything about transmissions.

Anyone wants to help, feel free...

I think you may have pointed out the problem. The Shift E solenoid may be malfunctioning and locking up the converter clutch when it shouldn't. Maybe pull and inspect the Shift E solenoid?

When it's safe to test, maybe you want to try disconnecting the Shift E solenoid (you'll get MIL for it), but see if the problem disappears. This should prevent the TCC from engaging, if the problem is with the solenoid itself and not the lock up clutch.
