4th Generation Sluggish in 2nd

i was working on the car to determine is its my solinoids or the transmission is bad i made a couple of observations when i unplugged the solinoid harness in the engine bay.

1. Very sluggish in 2nd until about 60kph - taking about 12-15 seconds compared normally about 6-8 seconds
2. Rpm's lower 110 kph is 3000ish +-100 compared to 3800 +- 50
3. Note sure what gear its starting in But if i manually select one gets Lots of Torque. if in D also very sluggish

Im not sure if the solinoids are gone or the ECU going or if the transmission is failing ..

Oh by the Way its a 1997 Model Year with the 1mz-fe and the A541E transmission with 308500 kms

How does the fluid smell? I can't remember for sure, I think if the solenoids fail the transmission defaults to forth gear, which seems to fit your symptom. It could be any one of the items you had mentioned. Some of the scan tools can test the solenoids inside the transmission to see if they are actually working by activating then to change from one gear to the next..

one issue that still remains is that car will not shift until 3000 or 60 kph or have decent idle till warmed up which is making me wonder if there is a thermostat

So how is the transmission fluid? And have you find out if you have all the ranges in 'D'? Have you check for codes?

If you want to find out what is wrong with your transmission, you will need to figure out if it has all the ranges and which one is missing if not all the ranges are there.
