I am replacing the driver side axle on my 96 Camry.I am having a hard time putting that thing in.Can somebody tell me if there is a trick to install it.
if I4 align the gap in the snap ring to either the 12 o'clock or 6 o'clock position, i forget which, and slam it into the diff. It will take a lot of force.
if v6, idk

VTEC It's like waiting for really bad sex.
^ basically the same thing- not sure about the alignment of the snap ring though. just jiggle it around and rotate it until it goes in. a sharp rap with a good mallet will help it go in. it just takes some patience

I meant line up the clip at the end with the opening at 6 o'clock when installing the axle back into the transmission for a 4 cylinder. It helps without the clip hanging down and get in the way of sliding the shaft into the final drive side gear. Your way works too, but once in a while you may have to curse a lot to put the axle back in.
And on the V6 the inner joint can be unbolt with 6 Allen head bolts holding the joints together. The newer model V6 axle joints no longer come apart like the older ones from GKN, I think.

yeah, I was referring to the v6 allen bolts. both my automatic driver's side axle and my 5-speed driver's side axle was a one-piece design with no allenhead bolts, whereas the passenger's side had them connecting the outter axle to the half-shaft

Hmm, the ones that I had came across previously had been the same on both axle, bolts together; however, I cannot really say they are 100% like that either. It could also be the suppliers, maybe, don't know.
Oh well, live and learn.

If I remember correctly, Toyota used to have GKN and Toyota axles, so I wouldn't be surprised about the different axles. Also back in those years, certain regions get cars from Japan, and other regions get cars from the US plant. And the model years may also make a difference; never care to keep track of those stuff.
