Temperature Anomaly: 92 Camry V6

My temperature guage goes up to midway, past it a bit, then back down at times. Sometimes it doesn't. On an older vehicle, Id say the coolant thermostat is sticking, but it is practically a brand new toyota brand thermostat months ago. I put it in by the book. Didn't start this until months after the new t-stat.

Would a sensor do this? Or is it something else? (176,000 miles, rebuilt 1,500 ago)

Sounds like it is doing its job, unless you have another gauge to compare it with it is difficult to say whether you are actually having problem or not. When the engine heats up the temperature of course will go up, but then when the cooling fan goes into high speed circulating the air and cool down the coolant it will drop back down. Road condition and outside temperature will also affect the temp of the engine and hence the gauge reading.

Did you clean the radiator when you have the engine rebuilt? Any particular reason why you are concern with the temp reading?

it's never went this high, never over half way. It's just recently started this.

If you want to verify if the gauge is functioning properly try 70th page of this link: http://www.camrystuff.com/manuals/Gen3/be.pdf

Also check to make sure the coolant level and the fan is functioning properly. If everything seems to operating, you may have to keep monitoring.

MY suspicion is the cooling fan, because it goes full throttle at times. If I sit at a dead stop at idle, after a few minutes, the temp goes past half way a little, then back down quickly, and not at a specific amount of time to do so.

If I rev the car engine a little(1200 rpms), it will come back down after a brief pause.

Could any of these cause this:

Radiator fan switch
Coolant temp sensor
Power steering pump failing(so not giving fan enough pressure at idle?_

idk, this car is complex compared to the gm's ive messed with. As deep as I have gotten is the gm TBI. But im learning. Lots more sensors to check.

Did you flush the radiator when you had the engine work done? What about the water pump, was that replaced?

The first two items both are possible, the P/S pump, I don't think so if the fan actually went to high speed. The sensors you can test to see if they are within the spec range relative to their resistance. However, both require having good coolant circulation, so whether the pump or radiator are doing their job would make a difference.

I flushed the radiator myself after I bought the car. He said he replaced teh water pump, so it's new.

Check for uneven temp across the radiator to see if there are cool spots, which would indicate restriction of flow. And test the sensors to see if they are within the spec range.
