No Hi Beams - Switch Doesn't move forward.

Greetings,

I own a 1995 Camry, 4 cylinder, with 156K on it. This morning, my High Beams are disfunctional, and in part, because the lever will no longer move forward to engage them, but does pull back - though now the wipers come on.

I did use mt wipers and high beams successfully on Saturday, but for some reason, this morning when I proceeded to work, I was unable to push outward the actual lever to turn them on. Typically, when the lever is pulled toward you, the high beams are engaged until the lever is released. This of course is the same lever which engages the wipers - when I pull the lever down through a series of notches, the wipers work from low to high - and still does. But now, when I pull the lever towards me, the wipers come on!

Is this a fuse/relay issue? It''s never happened before.

Did you or someone else accidentaly hit the lever while getting in or out of the car? if so, it may have been damaged this way. if not, the pivot pins inside the lever assembly may have come loose. if so, this can cause simultaneous activation of lights and wipers by the loose lever against the switches inside. If you shine a flashlight in around the lever, what can you see? Chances are it will have to be disassembled to fix it.

uhh...the headlights and wipers are not on the same lever. The wipers are on the right lever and the headlights are on the left lever.

And when you pull the wiper lever (the RIGHT lever) towards you, the wipers SHOULD come on. It's the way it was designed to work.

Sounds like you need a combination switch assembly. And xtremeskier97 is correct, the wiper control should be on the right lever; the lights and turn signals on the left.

Greetings,

No, no one hit or bumped the lever whatsoever - it simily stopped working. I will need to examine the surrounding components as you suggested.

Given the comments below - this is the lever for the highbeams (Not headlights) and the wipers.

Sorry for the misinformation, (boy is my face red!) when I read your original post, I thought that maybe the 95 Camry had a different switch combination, (I own 4 Camrys-3 '92's and 1 '93). After reading the other posts, I had to investigate. I checked my service manual and found that indeed the '95 Camry is the same as the '92/'93. The combination lever switch that is used to turn the headlights on and off (by turning it) also turns the high beams on by pushing the lever away from you and low beam by pulling toward you. Pulling all the way back against the stop will also give you a spring loaded "flash" function. This lever is on your left and the wiper combination lever is on your right. Just try pushing the headlight switch lever away from you, it should work. If your high beams come on when you pull the wiper lever toward you (the one on the right), then yea, you have an electrical problem.

Hey Camry 6,

Thanks for your help - It's now functional! This is so odd, but all I can say is that I tinkered around a bit - careful not to mess with the airbag - and it worked! I can only assume that something made it stick. I noticed too -actually I noticed this previously - that the plastic housing around the stearing column had come loose, and it may have jammed something - I really don't know. But anyway, I now have high beams!

I live in central Virginia, and we need high beams here to see deer standing by in ditches waiting to bolt in the middle of the road when a car comes!

Again, thanks alot!
