3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I'm looking to do a transmission swap for my car. I have a 2000 Camry LE I4 2.2L with a automatic transmission. I would like to put in a Manual transmission since my the current transmission in my car is about to die day now. I've always wanted one, and I figure now's my opportunity since i will have to change the transmission either way when it dies any day now.
So Does anyone know where I can find one and if its possible to do this swap? Also how much money am I looking at here? Would I also have to change my engine to support a Manual transmission?
It's very possible, but it is a lot of work. Just off the top of my head, here are the things I can think of that you need.
Manual transmission
shift linkage
shifter assembly
clutch pedal assembly
clutch master cylinder
clutch hydraulic lines
clutch slave cylinder
clutch kit (throw-out bearing, pressure plate, actual clutch disc)
Flywheel for manual transmission
transmission mounts
front axles are probably different (left and right)
starter might be different
Toyota Repair Manual
I'm sure there are more miscellaneous parts. Probably the easiest (and likely most cost effective) thing would be to get a donor car at a salvage yard as those miscellaneous parts are the pain. Look in your yellow pages and see what your local salvage yards have.
One thing I will mention is that while Camry are very common cars, Camrys with manual transmissions are not. It might take a some searching to locate one.

Wow man that does sound like a lot of work. Do you think its worth it in your opinion to switch it to Manual? Because right about now, I have no transmission, it just died a couple of days ago! So i'm pretty much stuck in a rut now until next summer, because I usually store my camry for the winter. So I basically have now until April 1st to figure something out!!!
if you enjoy manual and are willing to put in the time and money then manual ALL THE WAY. the toyota autos are bad when it comes to gearing for the power band for the most part. but i agree with rich, youll learn ALOT more by searching then we can put in one thread.

I have a 2000 Camry LE auto like yourself. Unless I get a donor car for a ridiculously low price and have a lot of time, it's not something I would take on.
Personally I would just fix the automatic transmission, then sell the car and buy a Camry with a manual transmission if I really want one.
Take a look at this link. There is a very detailed write up on what it takes to R&R the automatic transmission. It includes cost as well.

Bigbird, appreciate the thought of me. I haven't done the swap yet, awaiting till spring or until I can get a heated garage.
As far as the searching goes, just type in trans swap, 5spd swap and narrow down the search to the gen 3 & 4's.
And don't give up, it took me several months to find the parts and when I finally did, I bought everything that is listed above and some more for $150!!!
