it's true, but the valves can still get damaged by the pistons if the timing belt breaks. it's not worth taking a chance [I wouldn't go over 120K on a timing belt even if it was never even near oil leaks and such] as you approach greater and greater odds of failure. They should last at least a solid 100,000 miles on these engines.
yeah i know some people are scratching their heads and saying, "valves Cant make disasteroud contact if the engine is non interference." From the factory, you're right. IT would be very odd for that to happen and the chances are rediculously remote. But, with time and abuse, carbon builds up on the surfaces of the valves and piston reducing this margin of safety [and it HAS happened before].
