Camry 2000 - groaning noise when accelerating

Two days back, my automatic Camry 2000 4 cyl (90k miles) has started making a groaning noise when accelerating. It starts from low speeds and stays so till I take my foot off the gas. It does not make the noise while slowing down after I release the gas pedal.

The noise seems to be from under the hood rather than under the car. Also the noise is not present if I accelerate when the car is stopped (in 'P'). The noise is not related to steering or turning since the noise is present even if I drive in a straight line without using the steering wheel or turning.

The transmission fluid level is okay but I dont know about differential fluid since there is no way to inspect. Two years back (at 72k miles) I had all the fluids flushed incl transmission fluid but I think the auto shop did not replace the differential fluid because I don't see the word "differential fluid" in the bill receipt. Would this be the problem?

Also, maybe (I am not sure) the noise started after my wife put the automatic gear into "2" from "R" once she finshed the reversing. But then she moved it into "D" from "2" before moving forward. I am not sure whether she moved it into "2" while the car was still moving in reverse.

It may something to do with your brakes, such as the ABS malfunctioning or a seized caliper. Have them inspected.

Maybe brakes might be an issue. It used to make a squealing noise randomly for the past 5-6 months. But if brakes were an issue, would it not made a noise even when slowing down or braking ? It does not. Also, the noise seem to be from under the hood (not sure though but it is somewhere down on the right side).

Will take it to the mechanic tomorrow to see what happens and will report back what happens there.

Btw, this does not have ABS. Front brakes are disc and rear ones are drum

Without seeing the car I could never be sure so this is just speculation. It could be a multitude of things anywhere from a wheel bearing to a seized caliper. Take it to a dealer pay the hour diag. and fix it yourself if you are inclined enough

an update ...i was on the way to the mechanic today and the groaning noise seemed to disappear slowly....and in some time the groaning noise went away completely and with that the random brake squealing noise reappeared....maybe some brake/seized caliper issue as "dave mc" and you mentioned......i will wait till the groaning noise reappears again....

Don't wait fer it to reappear. Just take it in and have it checked over. You don't want to find out it WAS failing and failed when you didn't have it checked.
