4th Generation Question on adding manual transmission fluid

Ok, so tonight I went to Valvoline and had my tranny fluid changed. I have a 99 v6 camry 5 speed. Last time it was done I took it somewhere because the fill plug above the drain plug was a bitch to get to and I didnt have a funnel or baster to use to fill it. So I figured I'd take it somewhere again as it's been 30k miles. Well, the guy changing it remarks on how much of a chore it'll be and comes up topside to look and we both look in the engine bay and see what appears to be a fill plug on top. My dumbass never noticed this last time and he pulls the plug and its indeed a fluid plug and even is magnetic! So, he tests it and adds some fluid with the drain plug still out and it comes through so he attaches the drain plug below but leaves the fill plug below out and adds fluid from the top. It seemed to take just under 4.5 quarts which is what most manuals specify. Once the fluid started pouring out of the lower fill plug then he stopped.

So all the fluid seems to be in there and there seems to be no issues. I called a few friends up who seem to think its no big deal but just wondering if anyone else has changed their manual trannies the same way or if it is preferred to just use the lower fill plug? Cause if going from the top is ok, then I'll just do it myself next time. Hope this makes sense. It's been a long day so my brain is racked.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but adding fluid to the tranny until it spills out the differential fill plug would be overfilling the tranny. Did you check the fluid level on the dipstick?

Read above. It's a manual transmission. There is no dipstick to check the level. And most ways of checking is until its bout to spill at the fill plug underneath

there is a plug on the top of the transmission with a "hat" on it though, which is a pressure release valve

Eye8, I'll try to snap a pic tomorrow. Headin to bed right now. But ya, I know the pressure release valve u speak of and this fill plus is right above it (above in the sense its towards the firewall as you're looking in the engine bay).
