Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
So I have a '99 V6 (1mz-fe) Avalon (i know, but camry threads are viewed more, etc.) and it gets pretty bad torque, but a huge torqueline past 4,000. Barely screeches the tires at the light like it really should, but my friends camry with 200k+ miles and the same motor does it fine. Just wondering, are there any upgrades MSD has for coils? I know there are 3 coils for the 6 cylinders (all on the front of the motor) and I already replaced the plugs with bosch iridium +4's. So.. any links? Thanks a ton
nope, unfortunatly because of the setup of the ignition on all 97+ im7s ignition booster is near impossible. but even if it werent it would not help ya much in the way of power, it would be good for boost but not for NA. i recommend that you hold out for a TRD supercharger or just accept the car as it is.

on the VZ/MZ motors, the intake has 2 throttle bodies. the usual throttle body and one that remains open till about 4000rpm then it closes. what the mod does is shut that second Tb for extra torque in the bottom. http://www.solaraguy.com/viewtopic.php?t=23181 for instructions.
Seems a little sketchy to me lol. You know of any other mods besides boosting it? Already did full synthetic, plugs, battery, uhh a k&n filter.. You know of any other good mods? Maybe a magnaflow cat?

besides intake, header, ypipe, exhaust, theres not really much in terms of NA mods. the ACIS mod does work for some low end torque. its not like you've gotta pay for it. thats why its called a free mod. other then boost <those are it.
The only intake I could find was a drop in filter. They have Injen kits for camrys but im sure its different dimensions, but would fit the engine fine. The 1mz comes stock with very short tube headers, so LT's wouldnt do much, maybe a few horsies. Yeah exhaust looks like what im gonna do. Btw, anyone know where to buy a decent TRD sc? Id be up for one of those

weapon-r should have an intake for the avalon.if not just go custom. buy a cone filter, a metal pipe around the same length as stock or a little shorter for an intake tube, and one of those adapter things to hook it to the intake. thats no more then 70 bucks. JP has headers/y-pipe for the 97 up style 1mz' for the toyota range. and dont buy the SC. for the price of one the power increase is minimal. best bet is to go turbo.
How much power can the stock auto tranny hold down? Mine sounds like it's goin out.. has really hard shifts when going into low, not so bad in 2nd, and the shifts are terrible every now and then. How much do new trannys run too?
A higher stall torque converter will help your off-the-line performance greatly... Start by checking out IPTtrans.com because they offer reworked stock TC units. This isn't considered your average bolt-on, but I before I got into all the mods on my Camry, my first upgrades on the car was a torque converter.

Hmm I'll look into that.. Honestly my car has zero low end torque. and i mean zero. It helped a lot when I changed my plugs to the iridium +4's but theres still something wrong.
Tony, you know any good places to get headers/ypipe? and performancecenter.com has some sweet deals on magna mufflers and cats, like seriously 1/2 off with free shipping so I think i'm going to buy those and trash the stock resonator and do my own piping from the muff shop. But yeah, I really need to get the stock y pipe outta there, its just messed up because of that weird friekin backwards bend

Thanks for that link though, really helpful
If your car really has no balls off the line, it would point to another issue. I am not trying to encourage you to race, but if you noticed your car is getting as slow as a friggin Civic DX off the line, it would be the ECU pulling timing due to faulty or aged knock sensors. If you are mechanically inclined, you can do a knock sensor relocation and mount it on a less vibrational location. Another fix is to under-torque the knock sensors and wrap the threads with thick teflon tape. This will dampen out any harsh vibrations (ie: header mods, exhaust mods, worn engine mounts, metal part touching chassis, etc.) and prevent the knock sensors from false triggering.

Hmm, intersesing. Do the knock sensors have to be in the engine or can they be external? And what kind of leak would that leave if I were to relocate the knock sensors? And would there be any potential problems with that
