Newbee, engine check light's on

Hello dear experts,

I am new to this forum. First a short history before asking questions:

1. I bought my first car a few days ago: a used Camry 4-cylinder 1999. I did the 110 -point pre-purchase check in Canadian Tire and it did not reveal any major problem with the car.

2. Yesterday the "Engine Check" light came on on the dashboard. I went to Canadian Tire and asked for the reason. They said the previous owner might have done something to temporarily turn the light off and it has come on again after 1 day!!!

Now the questions:
1. I apologize if my question is too stupid, but how much should I be prepared to spend for any possible repair?

2. Do you guys know any good mechanic in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, with reasonable price?

Thanks you very much in advance for your kind help and attention.

Shuresh

The check engine light can come on for many reasons. You need to have a mechanic plug in a "code reader" that will tell you exactly what issue is causing the check engine light to come on. Here in the states, many auto parts stores like Advance, Auto Zone and even Aamco Transmissions will hook up a code reader and tell you the problem for free. You may want to call around to the chain auto parts stores and ask if they perform this service. You can also buy a innexpensive code reader for about $75.00. Even if you dont plan to fix, knowing what issue is causing the light to come on helps avoid getting taken by unscrupulous mechanics.
