3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Need some help with this please. Car has been doing this ever since I got it.
-When the car is cold, and you drive it, the check engine light comes on. The engine bogs on part throttle or more.
It never throws a code.
So, what causes a check engine light, but doesn't record a code?
Ive unplugged the vacuum to the egr valve and egr modulator, so the egr isn't boggin it. Ive tested the egr by putting vacuum to it, and it works properly.
-AFTER it warms up, and i turn the car off to clear the CEL, it runs fine. It has the right pickup and it doesn't bog.
What gives with this thing?
BTW: The IAC valve has been cleaned and lubed, I do get the idle dive half the time. It comes at the point just before you stop (1 mph-0 mph), the idle dives to 500 rpms sometimes, then gradually works it way back up to proper idle, over 5 seconds.
Whats the procedure to obtain the code since it clears after the key is turned off?
I tried to just turn to accessories after turning engine off, didn't work, just a 55 code.
Do I do the te to e jumper while it's running?
Robert
Correct!
One rare possibility why you can't retrieve a code with a CEL maybe that your ECU is resetting itself every time you turn the key off, kind of like pulling the EFI fuse every time. If you still can't retrieve a code with the CEL on and engine running, check all the power feed to the ECU. If the power feed are good, then you may have an internal open circuit inside the ECU.

There are two knock sensors for 3vzfe, they are both under the intake manifold in the galley between the heads. And yes, a knock sensor problem would affect the timing.
I am no sure where would be a good place to find the codes for your car, I just happen to know what some of them are. Maybe one of the other members may have the list handy.

So I guess age would cause a knock sensor to go bad?
Are they easy to pull without removing the intake plenum?
They cost a fortune($130), so would you suggest a junk yard looksee?
