3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
This morning at about 4:45AM I heard what seemed to be an OEM alarm go off. It was the regular horn honking and the lights flashing. I was sleeping but the alarm went off two times before I got up and checked the car. When I got to the car, I checked the whole body for any damages. I checked the windows and noticed both the driver side and passenger side windows had been tampered with. I left my windows cracked open about an inch down, and I believe the person tried to pry the windows outward since they were both angled outward and to the side a little. I didn't have anything laying around except for a few miscellaneous things in the back seat (tripod on floor, aftermarket head unit faceplate, and GPS mounting pad [round black circle for the suction mount for GPS]). My windows are tinted 35% front and 20% back. In the lighting, it's hard to see inside unless you're looking through the windshield or off to the side while blocking the light from coming in. There were about 4-6 other cars parked at the time in the apartment complex lot. Only one other car is modified (I think it's a black Ford cougar V6-very ricey) but he wasn't parked there at the time. I unlocked all the doors (pressed the unlock on the remote 2 times) and the doors unlocked but the parking lights stayed on to suggest that the alarm had been set off.
Anyways, my question is, what triggers the stock alarm on a 2000 Camry LE? I thought it was only set off if the rear license plate is removed and/or if the doors are unlocked from the inside. Am I missing something? Will it be set off if the windows are pried outward? I know I don't have a GBS sensor or any other sensors for that matter.
Also, how hard would it be to put the windows back on the tracks? I tried pushing them into place but the passenger side will not roll up fully. I will take pictures in the daytime so you guys can see. Other than that, nothing was stolen and the rest of the car seemed to fine...I've been wanting to get a Viper 2-way paging system without remote start but with all the sensors (tilt, proximity, etc) but my dad said not to spend anymore on the car and that the OEM keyless entry would be good enough. I figured my car would be targeted sometime and it just was a few minutes ago. Any advice/info would be great.
I drive a 97 xle and I think I have been able to set off my alarm by pushing down on partially open windows before if the car has been locked with the key less entry remote.
Two other ways I have had it go off were:
Popping the hood release, locking the car with the remote and then unlatching the hood
Not closing the trunk all the way ( the wind kept lifting it up slightly and setting off the alarm. It did it like 3 or 4 times before I figured it out)
As for the window, its sits on the rubber track. If you can't push it back, you might wanna take the inside door panel off and do it from there. Just be careful since you have tints.

it also depends if your alarm is an rs3200 or rs3200+. the "+" signifies the addition of the glass-breakage sensor i believe, and that would be another way to trip the alarm- to break the glass or give it a hard knock. the sensitivity of it can be altered via a rotary potentiometer/knob on some models, if not all.
i have the clifford 10.5x - its beefed up with sensors on all 4 doors/trunk lid/hood/tilt sensor/back-up battery/ extended range pager and all.. so far, i must say- its the best investment to date..
its saved me plentys of headaches and worries.- if ur gonna spend that much money on a car, u better protect it bro.. good luck!
well glad they didnt succeed. but that shoudl tell ya not to leave ANYTHING in the car that might show that you have somthing expensive in it. robbers are thinkin if you leave the faceplate...the stereo is in there with it, if you leave the GPS mount...the GPS is in there with it. that right there makes it worth breaking in to see if theres anything else.
Thanks for the the advice and information. All the replies were helpful . I managed to put both windows back into place and they work fine now. I'll see if I can get an aftermarket alarm system (have the money but parents might not let me). The Clifford and Viper systems look promising. Hopefully it doesn't happen again. Oh, I also found out that the owner of a mini cooper got his car tagged that same night. So my car wasn't the only one that was targeted.
to my understanding, the alarm is tied into the interior dome light, trunk light and glass break sound sensor. what ever turns on those lights (opening the doors or trunk) or a loud noise will set off the factory alarm. havent accidentally discovered the hood sensor yet. i know there is a sensor on the hood but i thought it was only there to sense when the hood is open for the remote start (remote start doesnt work if hood is open).
