1996 Camry Transmission slipping

I bought a used 1996 Camry six months ago. It has been running great, except that recently within the last month, the transmission started to act up.

The problem only happens right after the car is started. Once it has been running for about 3-5 minutes, I don't see the problem anymore.

What happens is that in the higher gears, overdrive and the one below it, the car does not shift into those gears when it normally should, and I notice lots of slipping. After a little while, the transmission finally gets into the higher gears.

This happens frequently when I start the car, and immediately get on the highway, which is when I go home from work. When I leave for work, the highway is about 10 minutes away, and so I don't see this problem in the morning.

Is my transmission on its way out, or is there an adjustment that needs to be made? I've drained and filled it with new fluid twice (I realize I'm only partially getting the fluid out). I've checked the level, everything seems ok there. The car does not shift rough at all.

on the 96 camry, if the engine is cold, the car doesnt shift into the higher gears intentionally until the engine is warmed up. it helps to warm up the engine faster. they all do this - its normal.

in terms of slipping, check the fluid level and color. sounds like your level is either low (when the tranny warms up, the level raises) or the fluid is dirty and not red anymore, i would change it.
