3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
so i believe that my knock sensor is going...has happened in the past and being strapped for cash i only replace one of them..oh and my car is a 98 camry v6...so i have been searching tn and sg for a while now and i have not found an actually guide to wire both the sensors into 1...and can this be done without removing the intake manifold?...cuz i remember when i did this last it was a pain in the butt...any help will be greatly appreciated...thanks in advance
I have never wire both sensors together. However, I am just wondering if it would be easier to do that where the pigtail harness come out from under the intake manifold. The connector is right below the throttle body.

N.E.O.
Thats what i was thinking at first but i just was not too sure which wires were the correct ones...i found the post on sg but im still open to this suggestion because im a bit hesitant to rewire the ecu without proper knowledge..
you could do it at the pigtail harness, but in the engine bay, since only one of the wires is shielded, sometimes there is a risk of getting interference and the ecu doesn't like that either
at the ecu, you don't have to re-wire or cut anything. Just add a small piece of wire between the two knock sensor wires and you're good to go.
I've had my solara wired up that way for over a year now and it's still holding up fine (knock on wood), because I didn't want to have to tear the supercharger off and the intake manifold to get to the sensors and replace or relocate them like I did on my camry
and corey-> as for using the 3mz sensors, from what I can tell by looking at the pictures of the part on rockauto...the knock sensor is of a totally different design for some reason?

so basically i just have to connect both the knock sensor wires together on the ecu?...sounds easy enough...i think i will try this way....i have another question as well...how do the knock sensors go bad?...im not supercharged but i do occasionally have a heavy foot...and where are the wires located in the engine bay just so i can double check to see if my wires are ok in the bay.

They are different design, the newer are supposed to response to a wider frequency range, so the ECM can have better control of engine pre-ognition problem. They are mounted differently, instead of screwed into the block, they are mounted on a stud that are screwed into the block. About the same location.
Did you ever pull the code to confirm that you do have a knock sensor code?
N.E.O.
I actually have not yet pulled the code because the autozones around here (berkeley/hayward) dont allow me to use the obd2 reader...i guess they stopped due to prior theft...it just feels like it did when the sensor died before..and it starting to act the same too...I just wanted to post this because i want to be prepared when i find out..kind of a worst case scenario..
Update: I got home for thanksgiving break and i used my dads obdII reader and i got the code p0325. so i decided to wire both the sensors to the good one...the weird thing is its the same knock sensor that i had replaced less than 6mo ago...Kind of weird especially since im not supercharged.....i wonder why that happened...hmm...do you guys have any idea?...could it be spark wire cables or maybe rear spark plugs...well thanks everyone for all your input
