97 Camry XLE - ABS Problem - TRAC OFF CODE 43.

I got a 1997 Toyota Camry XLE V6. I am pretty sure they all came with ABS standard.

However my ABS is not working at all. There is absolutely not pulsation coming from the pedal under hard stops.

There is no ABS light ever. I even jumped the TC & E1 terminals in the diagnostics box to see if anything will pop up. There was no ABS light.

I connected an OBDII reader to see if there are any codes stored for ABS speed sensor, NOTHING.

It is like the ABS light has been disconnected/not functioning.

You guys have any ideas on what to do next?

Update Dec 15,2008: The bulb was missing. Bulb replaced and now I have a CODE 43.

Do you actually have a ABS actuator by the coolant reservoir? Don't really know if they are standard for the V6 or not.

Yes I have an ABS actuator by the coolant reservoir.

The ABS bulb does not light up when I start the car. I am guessing the bult is not functioning. I am just wondering if I can diagnose the problem without taking apart the dash.

Another problem is that damned REAR tailight light. All rear tailight/turn signal lights are working but the TAILIGHT light in the dash is still on!

Not unless you have a scan tool that is capable of communicating with the ABS ECU. Regular OBDII scanners don't work, it uses a different channel on the OBD connector. Or fix the bulb, then check it by jumping terminals 4 and 13, then count the blinking light.

Check to make sure all the bulbs are the correct ones. When does the warning light come on? When the tail lights are on or when you step on the brakes?

As soon as I turn on the tail lights, the warning light comes on.

Make sure you have all the correct tail light bulbs then, check for different brightness between the bulbs that would be an indication of different or change in resistance in the bulb.

Alright, thanks for your help N.E.O. I guess its time to rip apart the dash and see what's up. You are right, only Toyota will be able to scan my ABS ecu which will cost me major mullah!

Shouldn't cost an arm and a leg, if you just ask them to pull codes for the ABS system if there is any, without diagnose. Half an hour maybe!

Yeah. Also, if you take your cat to Toyota Dealership Service, they can tell you what exactly went wrong and wouldn't charge you anything to diagnose it.

You mean by the driver's side foot or in engine bay?

What would the fuse have anything to do with the ABS warning light?

In first post, how are you testing ABS system? on gravel? or snow? were you skidding.

Have you checked the electric connector on ABS unit? There is a couple ABS relays and fuse in engine compartment. I am not sure, but my 00 has ABS relays in separate plastic box (relay block NO.3) at radiator.
