4th Generation Identify this intake part/hose 2000 Camry I4

I have a split hose on my 2000 that I need to replace. It's causing the intake to bypass the air filter. That can't be a good thing. The problem is I can't identify the part so I can find a replacement. I can take a photo if that will help, but I'll describe it first.

There is a smaller (2") corrigated hose that branches off the main intake hose that connects to the air filter. This smaller hose is part of a small odd angular box below the main intake. It looks like the box and hose are all one peice. The letters "LUS2" are stamped on the side of the box. No luck with internet searches. I had the parts guy at the local auto parts place take a look, but he couldn't give it a name other than "canister" and couldn't find a clear reference in his catalog. My last hope after toyotanation is to drive out to a dealer and ask, "what is that thing!".

Thanks

Are you talking about the resonance box that is off to the bottom of the intake duct going to the throttle body? A picture would definitely help. Maybe someone with a CAI can sell you their take-off air cleaner and duct.

I did a quick google on "resonance box" and didn't find and pics for that. So here is a picture of my setup. I've marked the main intake to the air filter with blue markers, and my problem part with red markers. Don't worry about that open hole on the main intake. I moved the hose that fills that out of the way to take a clear photo.

BTW, it will be interesting to find out if this hose problem has any thing to do with the other issue I posted over here....

2000 Camry tick tap ping only when warm

That is the for resonance, if you can find a piece of flex hose you can take out the part that is torn, and put a clamp on each end in place of the broken piece.

Haven't had a chance to look at your other thread, maybe later; seems like it has something to do with pinging, maybe EGR problem. On a 5S-FE, it doesn't really affect it as much even with the intake problem like yours, it might change the IAT read somewhat.

Looking at your other thread, I can take an educated guess that the cracked hose could be causing your pinging. My reasoning is that unmetered air is entering the throttle body. This would cause a lean condition, since the ECU can not account for the extra air and add the appropriate amount of fuel for the proper mixture. A lean condition can cause piniging. Pinging is not good for the engine long term. One quick way to test this out is to clean the cracked area with alcohol and wrap duct tape around the crack. Then take the car for a ride to see if the pinging goes away. Either way, you will have to replace the cracked piece. The duct tape is only a temporary fix, if it indeed does fix the problem. Let us know what happens.

Good luck.

Mike

He has a 5S-FE, I think it has a MAP instead of a MAF.

Thanks for the help and feed back. I'm going to try and splice in a new peice of hose and see what happens. That bit of hose is rubber, not plastic, so tape won't be able to seal it well enough.

I've done some more searching, and unless I'm using the wrong official name, I can't see to find much about a oem replacement part. Probably a dealer only type part. I'll post an update once the hose is fixed to both threads.

And as far as I know I do have MAP not MAF, it that makes any difference to your diagnosis.

The reason I mention you car has a MAP because it doesn't meter the amount of air entering the engine except for the temperature of the incoming air. I think it is call speed density conversion or something like that.

Update:

The resonator box and hose are all one piece, kind of expensive and requires disconnecting several other bits that are attached to remove it completely. So instead I sawed off the hose near the box and clamped in a peice of radiator hose that I picked up at the auto store after they allowed me to look over the different sizes and types of hoses they had in the back. It took plenty of cutting and triming to make the new piece fit, and there isn't much room to work in there. But the replacment hose only cost about $8, and took me about an hour to put in. So now the air gap in the system is closed and I have a new air filter in. The new hose should last for about 25 years compared to the thin flimsy original plastic one. I can't tell much if any difference in performance and my ping remains, but I'm sure my engine appreciates the clean filtered air much more that the direct road dust is was sucking in. I'm updating the ping thread too if any one wants to see how that's going. I might be focusing on a timing belt that was changed by the dealer around the same time the pining appeared.
