3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
So ive decided, after much research
it may be CHEAPER and NICER to design my own fog setup, than the current options
a) use Pilot PL-115C (or B) at 115 with new american bumper
b) Bigbirds Jap spec Gracia bumper (removing yellow color) for 250+ shipping (which is around 200!!!)
c) other square fogs with cutting bumper
d) Stock hella fogs (200) cut bumper etc.
So the idea i have, is to make a look, similar to the JDM bumper
cutting the bumper would be no problem, my issue finding a glass lens to put IN the whole. Any shape is fine by me as long as it works!
also mounting the projector in that area will also be NO PROBLEM!
plenty of things to mount it too there!
So all i need, is to either
a) find a clear glass type lens that has the shape of the curve of the bumper
or
b) cut any shape, use a flat glass lens, and fill in the wholes with some bondo and excellent body work ;-)
i prefer a in this instance, cause it will look then just like (or similar, depending on shape) as the JDM bumper
BUT, b will leave endless options for shape, and endless amounts of work lol
as far as fogs go, im sure the standard Pilot or Piaa projector style will work great!
ill create a cone also so that people cant see into the back of the bumper there! ( like thru the lens at the fog, with nothing around the fogs lol)
Ideas are welcome, also check my post about leds, i might make these LED fogs :-D
nothing like 900 lumen SSC 10 Watt leds :-D
2 per fog will look great :-D
also
as far as painting goes, ne dudes in CT give me some places that will paint the car (full car) and at what price approximatly
it will require removing the stock paint on the whole car then repainting it completely
what you should do is find OEM foglight housings and then mount the entire thing in the space youve selected. like OEM 5th gen, solara, avalon, maxima, gen2 es300(almost identical to the JDM foglights) ect. somthing that will look good. that will save you ALOT of trouble because then youd just have to worry about mounthing the housings instead of teh glass AND the foglight.
so what your saying is those fogs have a curved glass lens that will fit perfectly?
mounting glass wont be a problem as far as i can see (esp if its curved right for the bumper)
i got to find pics of those fog lights u talk of
well im not sure what will fit but what im saying is find an entire foglight housing that will fit instead of building a housing type thing then fitting fogs in them.
well it will be easier to use a flat or curved piece of glass, versus having a premade assembly and having an even harder time trying to get it to mount to the bumper
see the way i see it, is that the premade assemblies, have one flaw, they have a different curvature than the bumper, and may look out of place
if i use a cone shape of some sort with a set of projector fogs, mount them to pretty much nething i want, and glue/weld a piece of glass into the bumper, ill have an easier time
unless u know of a fog that has the exact same curvature as our gen 4 camry's? if the gen 5 camry fog is that, ill go with that
if not ill have to keep looking
buuuut how are you going to get a perfetly curved piece of glass?? foglights have curverd glass and im sure theres some out there that would fit. may require some searching around on your part. i think a flat piece of glass with a foglight behind it is gonna look odd. but im prolly not seeing what you have invisioned in your mind.
yea prolly not
let me try to reiterate so it doesnt sound so odd lol
ok
clear glass, we shall say same shape as the JDM for now (tho i may do oval)
from the edges of the glass there will be a cone that falls back to a projector lens (so it will look like a housing, but the projector assembly will be actually free floating behind the cone, with only the lens poking out of the cone)
it will still be a halogen projector system, nothing to fancy, like the Navigator series (40-50 bux for a pair)
but will be a fog projector instead of a driving light projector
we shall be doing a 4 to 4.5 conversion at the end of winter, in the mean time we are purchasing a 4.5 se4t of headlights, rx330 projectors, TSX replica lenses, Hella replica ballasts, philips d2s bulbs and i already have a wire kit so that the low beams will stay on when i hit the high beams on!
that way there is no bulb flickering or any chance of it
total cost of headlights is estimated to be under 500 (closer to 400)
the fogs, well, new bumper is only about 100 bux (not including the fact that the whole car will be painted... at a pricey 2200) so some glass, some arm work and a 50 set of projectors, and some money for some cone material
ok...so your building foglight housings. how are you building the cone and out of what? my only gripe with your plan is that from what i can tell youll be forced to use a flat piece of glass as the cover for the rest of the housing.
i would think somthing like this would look good, OEMish, and be much easier to fit since youd just have to mount them. and you dont have to settle for finding a flat part of the bumper to fit a flat piece of glass:

but you seem to have a pertty set plan in place so i say go for it.
isee what your saying
but those housings cause a few issues
a) it wont fit with the bumpers curvature, at least most likely, unless u know that they do
b) aiming can be a pain that way
