Replacing engine coolant temperature switch

I was wondering if the coolant had to be drained first when replacing the engine coolant temperature switch on a 94 camry?

Just a little bit, or if you are fast enough, take the radiator cap off to release the pressure then put it back on, and just put a towel underneath it and swap it out.

I was just wondering if you took any readings with a digital volt/ohmeter before replacing the ECT switch, and if so, what those readings were and at what temperatures? Thanks for responding.
