3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I just wanted to thank everyone who gave me advice and more importantly anyone having this problem some info. My 99 Camry rattled something terrible when I went over bumps from the rear end. After looking at my car and this forum I was going to replace my Sway bar endlinks and then Control Arm 2 (the one closest to the rear) to try and eliminate the rattling. To make a long story short since it is a bit cold here I decided to go the quick cheap route and replace the sway bar bushings until spring rolled in. I got them for around 11 bucks I think from Advance auto. I backed my car up on ramps and removed the 2 bolts (one side at a time, used plenty liquid wrench and I believe a 12mm socket) and the bracket came right off. I wrapped the bar in teflon tape like the DIY for sway bar endlinks etc and went to town with the white lithium grease(pepboys ~ 3 bucks). After doing that I expected it to still be rattling but to my surprise that cured mine(and saved me big bucks, time and cursing at my car no doubt). I will let you guys know if the rattling returns but so far so good and it seems to handle slightly better also(rear end does not seem as loose). Anyway I thought I would share, this took me max about 1/2 hour from start to finish and was around 15 bucks.

I'm having this same problem and i went under the car to have a look a the bushings and they looked ok to me. What did yours look like?
when I looked at them they did not look bad just dirty from road grime. When I took them off I did realize that they were a little less rigid than the new ones. My plan off attack was that I was going to start with what I thought was the least expensive things first that could be causing the problem. I would strongly suggest that you do that first given the near nothing cost in time and expense

Thanks, i went ahead and bought new bushings a week ago and installed them and I still have that damn rattling noise. WTF! I also gone ahead and replaced the rear struts, strut mounts and new springs. I am at a loss here.

Check the swaybar endlinks and the rear lateral control rods.
