95 Camry Neutral Safety S

95 Camry 5s 4-cyl Auto

I have been having quite a difficulty adjusting the switch. Issues are intermittent no start in park, shift to neutral and it will always start, no reverse lights and no reverse light on dash. I can usually get the R on the dash and the reverse lights to come on if i move the shifter ever-so-slightly out of reverse. Hence why I was readjusting it.

Anyway, I've readjusted it as best as I could but I suspect theres corrosion internal to this switch and I'd just as soon not spend $300ish on a new one. Has anyone taken one apart and cleaned up the contacts? Doesn't look like it can be disassemebled, just figured I'd ask.

The procedure I used (correct me If I made a mistake please) was placing the shifter into neutral, loosening the two NSS retaining bolts a bit and aligning the index tabs as closely as possible, then tightening said bolts. Sound good?

Edit: On the above procedure, is there any error of margin for the index tab alignment?

You have to adjust the switch and then the cable also, those are two separate but necessary adjustments.

Check out page 55 and 56: http://www.camrystuff.com/manuals/Gen3/ax1.pdf

Adjustment of NSS on page AX1-55

On page AX1-55 it says to Push the manual shaft lever fullt to the right side of the vehicle. (I assume that is with cable disconnected)

Then it says to Return the control shaft lever 2 notches to the U position.

The picture doesn't show a U position, It does show the N position.

Where is the U position?

Thanks,
