4th Generation Changing Valve Seals 1MZ V6

Hello

I want to change the valve seals of my 1MZ 1997 since it´s burning a lot of oil at the starting.

For Those who have made it already, what do you need exactly to have a good job made? As you know I live in Costa Rica and I need to order the parts so that´s the reason I am asking.

As usual any help will be appreciated.

QV

Well, it's a tricky DIY job if you have experience working on shim over bucket setups. If you have never done work on a head before it will take some serious time and dedication to get the engine back together with no problems.

buy that is my recommendation, that way you will be able to do the job with the heads on the engine. Will save you a lot of time as long as you take precautions to avoid dropping a valve...

It is possible to change the seals with the heads on. The link below is for another Toyota engine but will give you an idea of what is required. Plan on spending a long weekend.

You may be able to find after market valve seals a lot cheaper then Toyota OEM.

Use the rope in cylinder method to keep the valves from dropping down, it works well.

Just want to mention that the intake and exhaust valve seals are different, DO NOT switch them, otherwise, you will be using more oil than before.

Thanks to all for the answers

So I don´t need to remove the heads.

My mechanic tells me that I need several other parts, since I need to remove the heads to make it.

So if I need to remove the heads, What else would I need in addition to the valve seals and the head gaskets?

He is asking me to get the set of decarbonization to make the job. Does someones knows if this exists?

Go find another mechanic that can do it with the heads on. Like people have already mentioned, they're are known techniques out there to do it with the heads on. An experienced mechanic will have done this I'm sure, or at least find one that is not going to charge you book value for the job which probably is based on head removal. Once you start taking the heads off, the parts and labor go way up since you need new gaskets, etc. Decarbonization is basically cleaning the combustion chamber as far as I know. This is not necessary but advisable if you remove the heads.

BTW Luckynumber5, I watched the video of that valve tool. Very impressive. I bookmarked that for future jobs. Definitely the tool to get.
