Hi, I realize this is a Toyota forum and I have an Altima, but my question is general and should not matter. My bearing in the clutch on my original compressor went bad, and now it sequels pretty bad when it's cold, and has for a long time. I got a good deal on cleaned compressor, with a rebuilt clutch and new bearing on ebay. Really, really good deal. $1.24 with $24 shipping, just about $26 dollars in all. And it's no arrived and looks brand new, had no idea how heavy these things were. Anyways before I make an apointment to get this put on, I was wondering what they meant by it has no oil with it? I had an option to get compressor oil and I did not? Is that just the R32 stuff or is it something else? Thanks!!

Depending on what kind of refrigerant that you system uses, R12 or R134A, each system uses different type of oil. Whomever you have to install the compressor should be able to tell you what kind of oil that it requires or you should find that in the repair manual or maybe even in the owner's manual
From what you have described you may not have a back bearing in your compressor, maybe a loose belt. A bad bearing will cause noise all the time not just when cold.

N.E.O.
Yeah I figured it was the belt too, but I've replaced it and I still get the noise, it always does make this noise, its just louder when its cold. Kind of a rattle noise, if that makes sense. I think my car uses R134A, at least thats what I recharged it with this summer. Thank You !! N.E.O.

Not familiar with the A/C compressor on Nissan but it is probably the same ones for Toyota, it is probably the valve plate inside the compressor that is making the noise. They usually works fine but makes a bit of noise when it cycles on.
I think R134A uses PAG56 oil, can't be sure though, ask the repair shop if they know what goes with R134A or call up a Nissan service department and ask.

Hmmm. So this PAG56 stuff actually goes into the compressor itself, I assume in clutch? And this is separate from the R134A, I will definitely make sure they know it has no oil.

Seems like I was wrong about the type of oil with R134A, the oil isn't PAG56. Here is a thread that discussing about A/C system, and the OP came up with a chart: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/sh...56#post2593556
