3rd Generation noob question..Could I spray new clearcoat on old to get a better shine?

Would this make the car shine better and hold wax better? My car is white so it doesnt shine much to begin with, however the hood and roof shine very well. If i put down some layers of clearcoat would it make anydifferece? no matter how much i wax it never really comes out like some other white cars i see. i liveon the shoreline of CT so the weatheris kinda rough on the paint. Iwas thinking of waiting for a hot day this summer and cleaning the body really well and laying down some clearcoat

Not a good idea IMO. You'll first need to buy some heavy duty, body shop supply, wax and silicone remover, and get ALL traces of wax off the clearcoat that's on there. Then, you'll need to sand out the clearcoat so the 'new' will adhere properly. If you sand first without treating the surface, you'll be rubbing the contamination into the clearcoat and the fresh clearcoat won't bond. All's said and done, you'd be better off sanding/buffing out the existing clearcoat with any one of the many paint treatment systems available from auto body supply shops in your area. Then, go with wax and buffing again.

Anything you would do to the car yourself in the form of clear coat would most likely only make it worse.

Don't even think about clear coating yourself unless you have the proper equipment and the 2 part poly clears used by professionals. (They're expensive too, $200-$300/pint) Nothing in a spray can is going to work well at all and will make a complete mess of your car. It will never cure as hard as a real clearcoat. The only other possible alternative if you really want to spray it yourself without proper equipment would be to get a jobber to mix up a real clear spray bomb for you just before you spray it (since it will be curing in the can) and use that. But I've never heard of someone actually doing that. As well, these paints have ISO's in them, so they're not very healthy to breath.

You may want to try a clay bar on the car first to clean up the paint from tree saps and air pollutants, followed by a buff using a light rubbing compound. Unless the clear is actually worn thru or very thin, that will likely get your shine back. If it doesn't, then light wet sanding is the next alternative, but you need to be careful.
