3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 96 Camry Le l4 and I just replaced the serpentine belt a week ago. And during the past 4-5 days it is making a terrible shrieking noise noise. I cant figure out whats wrong with it. Sounds like its somewhere around the alternator. It only does it when i have the heat turned on.
A new belt often stretches a bit quite quickly. Recheck your belt tension, I bet it's too loose. Not sure why it would shriek only with the heat turned on... is it in defrost mode?... and the AC compressor is kicking on? That would explain it.

hey matt,
my mom's 98 camry v-6 makes noise with heat on (fan on high) as well but more of a whistle then a shreik my 98 i4 also does it just a minor PITA but my music drowns it out- may be an idiosyncracy, but do have it checked out.
BTW was it always like that or just after belt replacement?
Yes, it is more difficult, but not crazy difficult. The trick is to go at it from inside the wheel well. There's a removable plastic panel/skirt to remove to get access to it. A couple of the bolts on the PS pump mounts are still a bit difficult to reach.

Questions: Does the shrieking sound like squealing rubber from a belt slipping?... or is it more metallic sounding, like a bearing-going-bad sort of noise?
If it's the former, I'd still guess the belt has stretched a bit and just needs a little tightening. If it's the latter (metallic sounding), and it only shrieks when the AC compressor is engaged, then the compressor might be going bad.
