I have a 01 camry, 4 cyl, 5spd manual, 90k miles.
The car works just fine but during cold starts the car idles excessively high. (in my oppinion)
when outside temperature is about 32 deg. F or less the car will idle at 2000 rpm even 2100 rpm for 2 minutes before it starts warming up and dropping rpm over time to about 750 idle when fully warmed.
even during the summer when temp would be around 60 deg F the car would idle at about 1600 rpm for the first 2 minutes.
I live in michigan and temperatures are getting to 10 deg F in the morning and somehow i dont feel it is appropriate for the engine components to run at 2k RPM when everythign is so cold.
is a 2k rpm idle normal on cold start for a manual transmission?
I always let me car warm up for 2 min before i leave, and i've owned this car for about 5 months now.
once warm car runs fine, idle is fine (maybe a little too low at about 750 rpm , it shakes very slighly when under electrical load (headlights, read defrost, etc) but i figured that is normal for a 4 cyl)
I read some threads about this , so i know this isn't the first camry to do this, but no-one seems to have an answer.
for the engine coolant temp (ECT) sensor how would i measure resistance, between chassis ground and what? is it just one wire?
would cleaning the trottle body help? how can i check the idle air control (IAC)?
cleaning the throttle body may help and to my knowledge you cant "check" if the iac is working without replacing it but the idle does seem high but not irregular. when i had my camry it would idle at 2100 rpm on a cold day and 1600 rpm on a warm day as well.

Can't believe any OEM would design something like that. Do all 4th gen camry's do this? does it have anything to do with this one being a stick shift?
2000 is not excessive at all its the computer that is telling the engine to rev higher to get the engine to its normal temperature... mine does that but mine is an automatic and my tranny wont shift over 4 when cold so it doesnt hurt the engine going to high rpms while still cold so ill say since yours is a manual then just try to keep the rpms low when shifting until the car is warmed up
i live in texas and when its 100 degrees out and i havent driven my car it'll idle at 1800 until its warmed up

All Camrys do this, and it has nothing to do with the transmission. When it is below zero Celsius my auto V6 idles at 1800-2000 rpm right after I turn it on. The colder it is the higher the idle. I'm sure there is a good reason for this design.

Leave the engine off. You remove the connector from the ECT sensor. Set your digital volt/ohmeter to a 20,000 ohm scale. Touch the 2 probes to the 2 terminals inside the sensor. It doesn't matter which probes go to which terminal. Do this morning cold and compare your reading to a chart listed in most manuals, or report your findings and the temperature it was taken here and someone should be able to help you.

yup yup.. its normal.. when you first start it let it idle and watch as the RPMS drops as the engine temps rises...

Just so you know, most cars does this. Recommended for you to wait 2-3 minutes in the morning so everything can get circulating then drive, taking it slowly until it reaches normal rpm.
