3rd Generation Knock Sensor + Poor MPG

Have a '93 3vz-fe engine camry

The CEL light comes on shortly after starting it, I used the jumping pins method to read a CEL code 55 which is knock sensor.

I am rather afraid of going in there and messing with the ECU wiring and such, is there a way to test the knock sensors?

Also, outstandingly, the car only gets 12-14 mpg combined city & highway, fuel filter recently replaced and got about 18 mpg for like 2 tanks but went right back down to 12-13 mpg.

The car accelerates fine and has plenty of power, any ideas/thoughts are welcome.

Outstandingly? Wouldn't 'unfortunately' be a better word here?!

Now if you said your car gets 26MPG, then you could use outstandingly! LoL

Mine gets about 18.5MPG at the moment, but that's with VERY worn plugs and a CEL on for the rear O2 sensor!
