93 camry 2.2 4cyl

Hi new guy here first post. I searched and searched here and google.

How to get to the fuel pump? Is it a drop the tank deal? I want to check power at the pump. It is my wifes daughters car. It died the other day.

I am thinking it is like anyother electronic fuel system and the pump prepressurizes the rail before starting? Is that correct?
Does it need an rpm signal before the pump comes on?
I don't hear the fuel pump comming on. It had a somewhat week spark, but won't fire on ether. I wish I had a link to the downloadable manual for this or the 94 year. Fuses appear okay.
The gal said she hear a pop I'm guessing back fire, it had been dying at times. Cam turns, its so cold out have only done a few tests here and there.
Hmm ice in fuel killed the pump? What is the relay and fuses for behind the kick panel under the glove box on passenger side? Really need a good wire diagram for this thing. Thanks

Oh and no codes were set.

Back fire through intake or exhaust?

Try www.autozone.com for wiring diagrams. The site has a very good repair section for cars.

There is a Circuit Opening Relay that closes if the engine is being cranked over then stays closed if it receives a voltage from the computer that the engine is running. This would be the safety relay for the pump.

This relay is located behind the glove box.

You can bypass all the relays to power the pump. Find a small box inside the engine compartment labeled "Diagnostic" typically on the passengers or drivers shock tower mount. Inside the box are electrical terminals, jump the FP and B+ with wire then turn on ign key. The underside of the lid has the key.

For pump access remove the rear seat lower cushion. Pull up at the front side of the cushion. There is a steel cover behind the drivers seat that will be obvious. Remove this cover to access the top of the fuel tank and expose the access cover to the pump. The pump and fuel sender are connected to this cover and comes out as a unit.

The info is second hand from her daughter, so who knows what the pop was. It was all guess work on my part. Lean pop as a guess = intake. ie pump dying, all a guess again. LOL
I sure thank you for the info. Is that manual still here for down load do ya know?

Okay the rear seat cushion is out and got the cover off and unplugged the connector. Now I need the pinouts on the pump and or connector. Not in the wire diagrams on the autozone site. Also do you know which relay is the one that triggers on for initial pump run and then locks on with an rpm signal?

Thanks

Fuel pump power is Blue/Black

Ground for fuel pump is White/Black

The pump relay gets its power from the EFI relay. This should be located in one of the plastic relay boxes in the engine compartment.

The Circuit Opening Relay has two separate coils in the relay to activate the pump switch. One coil goes to the starter circuit (Black/White), the other activates via the ECU (Green/Red). Guessing the ECU grounds this wiring to complete the circuit based on inputs from the igniter.

There are Toyota factory service manuals stickied at the top of the Camry forum over at AutomotiveForums.com. Go there and download the manual for the generation 3 Camry. It is actually a 94 Camry manual.

"jump the FP and B+ with wire then turn on ign key." Did you do this as toyomoho suggested? If so, did you hear the pump run?

Mike

If it wasn't so stinking cold out I would make some head way on this.
This is a good one. Have spark, fuel pump works ie filter sprays nicely wires checked etc, injector wire number 1 fires a noid light, too much trouble to check rest of them, have not done full comp test yet. Timing belt appears good, timing is looking real good, other thought has anyone had problems with the cam gears or exhaust cam breaking? Being redundant the four terminals off distributor check good.
QUESTION, don't see it in the 94 manual, but this has a plastic deal with wires going through it in front of the valve cover, I want to remove the valve cover so whats the deal there?
Thanks guys

The plastic sleeve is not attached to the cover. Remove the cover, it will stay put.

Thanks to other stories on this site. It runs.
It was the coil. It actually had a burned area in the epoxy. I ended up getting a rebuilt dist, probably should have just replaced the coil. They glass bead the rebuilt ones, and don't cover the journal that fits into the valve cover hole doing so increases the size a small amount don't just hammer or force it in you may not be able to get it out, so I had to hand work it to size 320 or so emery. Just a heads up on the rebuilt distributors.
Thanks for the help everyone.
