How big of piece? Is it big enough not to be drawn down the coolant tubes of the radiator, if so it should stay in the top of the tank?

if its that large, youd probably have to remove the radiator and drain the fluid out of the coolant hose fittings and hope the gasket comes out...thats about the only advice i can offer

Have seen those cap come apart and fall into the cooling system, however, never seen it cause any problem. It is after all a rubber piece, the worst case scenario, the rubber piece got stuff between the opening of the thermostat and it won't close all the way and it takes longer for you to warm up.

BTW, that cap has a larger piece of rubber seal than a nickel. If you are too concern, you can take the coolant housing off, but it could have gone somewhere else that you can't see.

N.E.O.
