The gear select light on my 96 camry isn't coming on. Does anyone know why? Sorry for not having too many details. It's located on the instrument cluster and runs verticly through the center.

There are a few possibilities, the connector to the instrument cluster is not connected properly, or the P/N switch at the transmission, or the wiring harness. Have you notice anything else that is not working with the transmission, the instrument cluster? Any check engine light or starting problem?
Didn't you repair or replace the engine recently? I would start from the transmission then.
Have you spilled coffee into the center console shift lever recently? Or disassembled anything in that area? If so, the problem is likely the switch attached to the shift lever. Remove the trim around the lever assembly to check for obvious problems.
Well it starts just fine. I doubt its anything with the transmission. And come to think about it, I remember cleaning up some dry sticky stuff that I assume was spilled soda/cola from the center console just in front of the shifter. Maybe that has something to do with it? I'm going to check it out tommorow, I have to replace the center console that surrounds the shifter anyway, so I'm probably going to open it tommorow and see if anything is wrong, then I'm going to check behind the instrument cluster to check for any un-plugged wires. Thanks for the suggestions.

I was referring to the Park/Neutral switch at the front of the transmission, not the transmission itself, that is where the signal for the indicator lights come from.
Well, I started opening the console a few minutes ago. I didn't see anything abnormal in there. I was in the process of removing the instrument cluster, but I got kind of stuck with the panel that goes all around to the radio and vents in the center. I'm just waiting for my dad to get back from somewhere to see if he can get it off. I already took off the screws, but its stuck on something at the far right side. I'm just paranoid that I'm going to brake something in there.

I've only had my '96 Camry for less than 2 months. When I got it, I noticed that the only light that doesn't come on in the instrument cluster is the 'D' light. All the others work. The seller told me that was normal. Is it?
Eh, my D light doesn't come on either. Apparently that's pretty common. Just be happy the R light comes on...if that doesn't come on, neither do your reverse lights. Mines been sticky lately...

Those bulbs can be replaced individually; however, the socket and the bulb is one single unit, and it cost more that a regulator bulb.
Now I feel like an idiot. I got the cluster out, and were I thought the light comes on, there's NOTHING!! I assume my camry was a lower trim level? I'm pretty sure I've seen the select light there on other gen3s. I guess it was an option on higher trim level camrys??? Well, problem solved. And now I get to clean the cluster!
