Camry suspension 98, die die die! and other mod questions
suspension questions of the day
im sick of the "feels like a buick" drive that damn camry has
so i think its time to do some work
but the homework end is driving me nuts! Tein... any good?
found a kit for 1500 (seems pricy) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/97-98...spagenameZWDVW
besides struts and springs, what else would i need to get it to handle better?
anything i can do to make the steering wheel a bit more responsive?
alot of people at this point are prolly going "just buy a new car"
BUT
i dont
why? Insurance costs, and 16000 grand turns into 18800 after APR
so if i had 18800 to drop on this car.. welll hehehe
why friggen not?
we are still in the deciding phaze for alot of the mods
but im thinking its worth keeping this car
and possibly getting collision back on it once the stuff is done (not investing 16000 into it lol, but willing to invest some change in it if its worth it, and i tihnk it is)
so mods in process:
Pilot fogs
HID retro and gen 4 to 4.5 conversion headlight
new led assembly for tail fin
engine start issues, trying stuff this weekend
leds under dash to be used as Courtesy lights (have a total of 4 1W leds in front, and 2 1 watts under back seat, WHITE)
leds in cubby under alpine radio (same idea, on switch so u can see wats in there)
car starter once engine start issue is solved
considering:
slotted rotors, ceramic disc
suspension Overhall (as to the current questions posed)
Professional paint job (keeping stock paint) and new front bumper (maybe ill get bigbirds jdm, but prolly not lol)
Rims and tires (16")
POSSIBLY a v6 swap (expensive and time consuming, may not bother)
exhaust and intake
retro taillights to have leds :-D (im an led master )
possible performance mods, 130 torque sux
tightening bolt for faster shifts (auto... blah!!!)
Alarm lol
So some answers to the suspension questions
and then some ideas if any on other mods we can do!
^ definatly do your research on suspension...LOADS of info around here, but what youve got in that link looks to be tein coilovers. if you just want a tighter suspension look to a spring and shock combo w/ TRD RSB.

yea man went thru that
a tighter shock is really one of the many things im considering for handling
it needs more torque cause it just doesn't accelerate on the highway (like 40-60 takes forever)
like i said, makes no sense to buy a new car if i know whats wrong with this one and the frame is in perfect condition
i did some research but theres too much garbage to figure out whats good
we need a list of DIY, and i know technically thats what eyeball has there, and ive gone thru that, but alot is not gen 4 specific, and alot is really threads discussing
maybe im spoiled from 8th civic with serious DIY with loads of photos and details, but these "DIY" dont really give me any info at all lol
ive been doing research like crazy
i just prefer suggestions at this point cause there is no difinitive answer lol
must be cause its an older car
i need something that handles like the civic to be honest
its tight, but not quite racing tight, similar to a street performance vehicle
there is serious advantages of that type of system, and my gf sees that and wants that, but doesnt want to pay the enormous amount of insurance and taxes on top of the price for a new car
considering all costs, just keeping this and spending money on it seems of more value
realistically, i think if i can get the torque up to 160 it will be fine for her
thats why an exhaust system with a decent amount of bends might do it!
keep suggestions comming tho!
ill do anything short of turbo on this car

almost everything gen3 will be shared with the gen4 as far as suspension performance. thats the main reason no one has made a gen4 specific suspension thread, really no need.
aside from a few changes in brands thoes hold true for the gen4. with the exception of Tein and a couple others. i know teins from my old gen4. they have 2 springs to choose from, Stech and Htech. Htech is softer, more progressive and less drop. stech is tighter lower and will provide better handeling but not by much. shocks id get tokico period...want somthing stiffer...expect to spend at least close to a grand for K sport COs or higher. its all good it just depends on what you want. looks like your lookin for performance over looks so id suggest eibachs on tokicos WITH the TRD RSB...or coilovers.
get the "civic" idea out of your mind...it would take twice as much to get it to handle like your civic, and at twice as much youve bought about all you can buy.

if your not gonna go turbo ull never see 160wtq, hell prolly crank tq either. an exhaust...FULL exhaust, would make any real gains. but you still wont get the 160 your looking for. keep in mind also how much money it would cost for a full exhaust and that the stock 5sfe exhaust doesnt even flow that bad. restrictions are mainly at the cats, muffler, and exhaust manifold(though i think the gen4 one has a better design then the gen3). there are thousands of people who get buy with the stock power of the 5sfe...why does she need more...and would it be worth the money spent to get it?
i know its not what you want to hear but what your looking for your not gonna find it in this car for the amount of money you seem willing to part with. your best course is to stick to light mods like suspension, light performance mods and visual mods(or none at all), find a car that will suit her wants more and then get it whan you can.
Honestly dude, a turbo is just not what i want for this car AT the moment
i know an exhaust and intake (when i say exaust i dont mean a canister, im talking from engine back lol prolly magnaflow) wont give 160, but there are other things that can be done
ive seen something about replacing the heads with the 3gst or soemthing like that head
might do that
replacing the manifold (found a few actually)
regrounding the engine (one friend did it on his intergra and actually gained a few hp... i was surprised, so why the hell not!)
is there anything that can be done about that wishy washy steering
she likes the way the car looks (or can look lol)
dude ive seen them take buicks and olds and make them handle better than civics, it can be done and at very little cost
im not looking for racing performance, just better than wat is already there
seems like tokico is the way to go for shocks, and maybe the tein springs
we shall see, this isnt like were doing it all in one week
i take my time with EVERYTHING i do and plan it out
i just need the car to not be so wishy washy as it is
TRD RSB + Tokico HP Struts will give you the most gains in handling if you dont want coilovers, as far as springs its up to you since we dont know which spring rates are optimal .... but Tein is a good bet
as far as steering, youre out of luck there ... but i know my gen 3 will steer just fine in spirited driving
as far as making power N/A ... to hit 160 whp (which is about 60whp over stock) youre gonna need to build the head, not just add bolt-ons ... dont believe me? try it and find out the hard way

no no venom, 160 FT LBS of torque lol not HP
dont give 2 sh**s bout hp lol shes not racing the damn thing lol
ok so well get the tokicos and the TRD RSB (except where the hell do i get that? found the tokicos)
ill stick for now looking at basics for now
i was throwing numbers out there, cause its just too laggy on the highway (40-60 mph acceleration SUX)
really dont feel like building the head
160 wont be achieved for under a couple thousand...at the least...turbo or not. replacing the head, manifold(intake or exhaust), grounding, WITH a full exhaust could possibly(big maby) get you 160tq. dont worry about building the head because it woulod be a complete waste...period. liek you said, keep it simple and accept it as is...unless your willing to shell out the doe. or get a v6, clean, simple, direct, best choice.
as he said...steering cant be helped.
what buick has EVER been made to handle as well as the civic...even after extensive modding. and not for little money either...i dont know where your gettin your info. i spent loads on an old car on suspension...a civic with cheap coilovers handles like its on rails.
i got my shocks on ebay...good deal there. your selection is a good one...just pick a good set of springs like H&R, tein or eibach.
even still ... 160 ft lbs at the flywheel could be possible, but at the wheels its still gonna require at least a port & polish, and probably cams which means valvetrain upgrade as well

to be honest...just a 5 speed would prolly be the best option if your willing to do it. it would eaisly make up for the gains at 160tq with the auto...cost less too. of course she would have to learn to drive stick but the millage would be better and acceleration would be better through out the rpm range.

dude, ive seen BIG as cars completely redone to be real handleing kings
they do it alot in MA and along the berlin turnpike in CT
i knew of one buick that could out handle a b16 civic that was modded with a good suspension and nice tires
i saw the buick just hug the corners like it was a sports car!!!!
completely surpised but i KNOW it can be done, (not looking for sports car handleing, just BETTER in any way, as for wider rims, better shocks and springs, too bad on the steering wheel stuff, blahhhhhhh

a 5 speed would, but she needs an auto unfortunatly
i drive 5 speed personally, and will always pick it over any auto or even 6 speeds! (winds up to quickly for my tastes)
for every day driving, 5 speed wins, but we take her car into cities and ive already had to replace the clutch on a VW thanks to boston (it was worn neways but that just KILLED it)
as much as id like to do a 5 speed (and i would do it if it was my car) its not what she wants
but keep the ideas comming :-D
nothings better than turning minds, its the reason we have even a CAR today!

oh i dont doubt its been done, though its not like that really matters in this case anyways since you(and many others) dont want to spend the money to achieve that. but you will never get a large car to handle as well as a smaller car for the same amount of money(depending on aftermrket support)...especially the civic.
that being said...you can get the camry to handle MUCH better then stock for fairly little with the three things we've mentioned. tight shocks, springs, and TRD RSB. ull be happy with the results over stock. but it will never be as well handeling as a civic with the same amount invested.
as far as for performance, i think we've presented all the choices you have. youll have to look at your budget, goals and practicality and decide whats best. good luck with it all man.
