what do they mean?

i was just reading through the manual and in the automatic transmission section, they say there needs to be 13mm between the transaxle housing and the engine? what do they mean by that? does that mean the torque converter sits 13mm inside the transmission housing? slightly confused

The measurement is for checking the torque converter to make sure it is installed properly. The measurement is between the bell housing/engine mating surface to the torque converter mounting lug. If you have the correct measurement then the torque converter is installed properly into the transmission. You can refer to the figure on how to measure the distance.

The converter needs to engage the trans via a tang and slot arrangement. If the torque converter is engaged correctly it will drop back in the trans housing a little and thus have the correct measurement.

If not engaged, the converter will extend out of the housing too much. Upon assy of the trans with the engine the converter will be driven into the trans oil pump causing damage.

Make sure your fill the torque converter with trans fluid if it was drained.

You can fill the transmission any time you want to, however, to properly check the level, the engine has got to be running.
