3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Injen and weapon R make short ram intakes for your camry and if you want to turn it into a cold air intake then injen sells an extra pipe for that or you could supply your own.
You could also make a custom intake by using either your stock intake pipe or intercooler piping, then attaching a cone cotton/ gauze or foam filter at the end.
Or you can get yourself a drop in filter from k&n and get some hp gains, but not as much as if you had a cold air intake.
Basically there are 2 main factors that determine your hp gains from an intake: 1) amount of air it takes in 2) temp. of the air it takes in. A cold air intake gives you the best of both worlds. Good luck with the camry and don't be discouraged about modifying it.
If all you want is noise, just get a pod filter (and possibly an adaptor to fit) to make it SRI(short ram intake) and get a cheap ebay 3" muffler. Pod filter will give you induction noise and the muffler will make it louder, also giving it a deeper tone. You'd spend less than $100 for that.
Getting the above will give you a bit more power, but that's only if you follow through with replacing the entire exhaust system to ensure no bottlenecking effect of the stock exhaust system.
IMHO, if you want to improve performance on the Camry, FIRST spend the money on a high performance driving school.
If you then want to improve the CAR, it's got plenty enough power, likely more than the stock OE chassis/suspension can handle in a performance situation anyway. Also, stealth is NOT a bad thing, and a Camry is almost by definition a "sleeper". Primary work should be on handling the power:
1. Necessary repairs/upgrades to basic systems (brakes, cooling, electrical, etc), maybe upgrade the brake pads/rotors. Good to be able to stop.
2. Handling: Suspension, wheels/tires, and safety items like seating (the stockers are a little broad for my frame).
THEN consider adding power. What was that old Pirelli ad?
"Power is nothing without control".
THEN work out non-performance cosmetics, including sonic cosmetics like CAI/SRI and exhaust. If it sounds fast, better first make sure it IS.
the only CAI that has been dyno proven was the CPE...and thats mostly because of the mod chip it comes with that changes the signal to the computer. other then thats its jsut sound and looks, not much performance. the best ones ive seen were the ones people built with the specter modular tubing.
the best bang for buck is suspension mods. i dont however agree the camry is a sleeper...even the v6 is pretty slow by today's standards. but it was built a long time ago so its kinda hard to call that one.
