exhaust flex pipe leaking camry 99

Hi Guys,

I've a Camry 99 which started making lot of noise, supposedly coming from somewhere near engine. I got it checked from a local mechanic, and he tells me that the exhaust flex pipe is leaking and has to be replaced. He quoted the cost to be $200. Any ideas what could be done to verify if the diagnosis is true and the cost is justifiable?
Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks.
Bhush.

Sure, jack the car up on stands and start it up cold. Then go under with a flashlight and look for exhaust from the flex pipe area. Use a mirror if necessary to look at the top of the pipe, but I doubt it will be necessary if you start it up cold. It should be pouring out of there.

If you ran up on a curb or hit something underneath, the flex pipe can get damaged if your exhaust downpipe takes a direct hit. Or, I guess it can just wear out, or if mishandled during repairs, it can get damaged.

$200 is not that unreasonable. $250-$300 will probably get you a brand new one though? You may be able to find someone to weld a new flex piece in for $150, but not much cheaper.

Sounds about right to me. $200 isn't too bad either.
