1993 Camry Power Door Locks

Hey there

My driver side power door lock switch can lock but cant unlock all the doors, while the passenger side door lock switch can unlock but cant lock the doors.

The passenger side went first and the driver side went a few weeks later.

I know on the passenger side switch it isnt the switch that bad because i tried the contacts myself with a piece of wire and nothing happened. Are there any fuses or anything i should know about or check?

Also, the aftermarket alarm which has been in there since '97 can unlock and lock the doors without a problem. The driver side door keyhole can too.

Well, 95% of the time it;s 1 of 2 things.

1: The switch(s) themselves are bad.

2: The door wiring broke, which is VERY common. The wires in the rubber tubing between the 2 front doors and body is where to look. Undo the plugs behind the kick panel, take the door panel off, and pull the harness out from the body, into the door, then out from the door where the door panel would be. That gives yourself a lot of room to inspect it. Pull back the rubber and examine all the wires. Any you see broken, solder and heat shrink back together.

Like I said, itls very common, so thats likely the issue.

3rd Generation

So I took off the door panel and everything today, it was about 40 degrees outside so rather cold. I just couldnt figure out how to get the rubber covering all the wires between the door off. Also, can anyone give me some knowledge on how those door locks and such work. There are three contacts on the switch. Are the lock and unlock providing like positive and negative current or are they like the door sensors which simply provide a ground? Some helppp here please. Also, is there any chance the two are interrelated? No locking power on passenger side & no unlocking power on driver side?

Not sure how the switches work, but I can confirm that the insulation cracks and the wires either break or short out causing all kinds of funny things to happen with the power windows and door locks.

I have had to personally cut out a 10" a section of each of the wires on all four of the doors on my 1996 Camry and solder in new pieces with heat shrink tubing to protect the solder joints. I kept all of the solder joints outside the rubber boot area to allow maximum flexibility of the wires in the boot area.

To get the wires out, you need to unplug at the recptacle behind the kick panel as ASG14 stated and then then squeeze the rubber boot from behind the sheet metal door panel in order to compress it and pull it out. The rubber boot has a groove molded into it which locks into the sheet metal hole - similar to a cable gland that is routinely used on a 110 Volt AC electrical power cords. I should have taken photos of mine when I had it apart. This question comes up every few weeks on this forum.
