3rd Generation Decision time.

Well, some people may or may not be aware that my car has a bit of an oil leak.
So, we will be cleaning the engine block tomorrow so we can at least cut some cost from the mechanic, as he will have to clean it too, but also so we can maybe diagnose the leak. My father is still steadfast with his earlier diagnostic, which was the head gasket.
But there are also several other costly issues with the vehicle.
The fan for the AC never shuts off. It's always on as long as the key is in the aux or start position, and when the engine is on. Also, the front defroster is always on too, thustly causing the windshield to fog up on a hot summer day with the AC on. I spoke with a family member recently, and she said her Ford (LOL) Escape has a similar issue, and the repair was around $600 with only a $50 labor charge, meaning the part is probably expensive. I have not researched the issue, but I'm assuming it's expesive. So, worst case senario, I will have to put down $1200 in repairs for those two things alone. But baby needs a new set of shoes soon as well, and new brakes. My rear passengers side rotor is warped, the passenger side rear window no longer works, the passenger side front window won't slide back up on its tracks, the rear drivers side window seal has a leak in the top. (Every time I clean the car, water runs down the inside of the window)
So now the decision. The car could be sold off for $2000 pretty easy. There are some local cars that look fantastic, and from what I can tell, are in good condition. Sadly, there are no fairly priced Camry's. (The cheapest is a gen 3.5 for $2900, out of my price range for a car as old as it is. )
So my options are:
Keep the car I have. Fix it up, and love it forever(ish).
Buy one of the following:
Saab 9-5, 1999 SE= $2450
Chrysler Sebring Coupe, 1999= $1995 (Also a better condition Sebring, same year, but in White, for $2495)
1997 Nissan Ultima GXE= $2695
and a few others, including a BMW that rox my sox for $2995.
I want to know what everyone here thinks would be the most economical disission. I hate the thought of not having my baby anymore, but I need to make a good disission.

IMO, just fix all the problems and keep the camry until you can buy a new(er) car. all of your other choices aren't that great.

How many miles are on the maxima?

BTW don't buy that beemer, look at the outrageous amount of miles on it!

Also you have to think about your price range. Sure you would look cool in a nice 328i, but you won't look cool when the damn thing blows up, sends you to the side of the road, and ends up costing you more to repair than it did to purchase...

If it were me I would keep the car and fix 'er up a bit. These things will last you much longer than anything else you listed, and many many more cars out there too.

Get the leak checked out, the brakes can be fixed cheaply; get some good pads, shims, rotors, and flush the brake fluid out of it and you'll be good for awhile, the other issues I am sure can be fixed yourself, and it would save you a lot of money.

If your specific problems don't come up while searching here ask someone that has good experience with those problems or ask to find someone that does

Lol. The only thing that I reaaallly like about that Beamer, is the leather seats. I should steal them and put them in my car. xD
It's not likely that I will do any work myself. I have a tendency to screw things up on an epic level if I don't know EXACTLY what I'm doing. I would probably end up making more issues in the long run if I do the work myself. Fortunately, I am friends with a master mechanic, so he cuts some slack on labor charges. My dads van gets free labor on brakes from him, just charges for the pads. Not sure if I can have that extended over to my car as well. Mainly about removing my dash, I just can't see me being able to do that. I don't have any patience, and I know that the plastic parts of the dash that are there still are too weak to be handled roughly, which scares me when I think about replacing the fan. No matter what the leak is, I will not be able to do it as well. I am not mechanically inclined to take anything apart. I can't even take a remote control apart and put it back together right. Well... I can, but for some reason it still doesn't work.

There isn't a Maxima on my list, there is an Ultima. It has 103,000. You can see it by clicking here.

Oops, no maxima

Well the only car I'd look into is that Altima, but check reciepts from the owner, ask for a mechanic to inspect it (maybe that one you're friends w/) before you buy it, bring your dad with you and you should both make sure the car looks like it hasn't been in an accident or anything...

How many miles do you have on your camry?

As far as not being able to do anything yourself on your car goes... I'd give it a shot if I were you. When I first started taking stuff apart I had no idea what the hell I was getting myself into and YES I have screwed things up, but my car sounds awesome and runs better than when I bought it now.

Taking the dash apart is very simple, a few screws here and a little careful pulling is all it takes, I would start with that. But before anything I'd go out and get yourself a Haynes manual and read that thoroughly.

Trust me, if you have the time, learning to DIY, saving the money, enjoying and feeling accomplished about your own work is well worth it

I understand ur pain. Just replaced water pump and timing belt and seals for total $300. But it doesn't seem to help keeping the 200k+ miles car from falling apart... Will be in the market for "new-used" car soon. For around 2-3k u can get a nice es300 gen 2, or even a gen 1 sc300 ...
