transmission problem

i have a 96 camry 4cyl. the check engine light is on and i had it diagnosed and they said it was the shift selonoid. i have two questions. first, will the shift selonoid affect my mpg, i am currently getting 18 mpg. second question is can i change the shift selonoid without droping the trans?

The trans has about 4 shift solenoids, do you know which one?

Might be the solenoid SL (also called E) that controls torque converter lockup. If the torque converter does not lock up the engine RPM will be higher then normal about speeds of about 40 MPH. This could cause a drop in MPG.

You can remove, clean, test, replace solenoids by dropping the trans pan.
