3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hi, my gen 4 5 speed has got a bad habit of jumping out of 5th gear... oh no.
I am unable to use cruise now...
The gear lever does move back and forward under load, and I was thinking maybe the movement is excessive and knocking the lever or pulling on the linkages to cause the problem.
NEW DEVELOPMENT:
Running around in 4Th gear instead of 5Th I noticed the ger lever not rocking at all in 4Th gear, when I moved to 5Th gear under the same sort of load, the lever rocks a lot...
Seems very quere, why the motor/gearbox assembly would rock in 5Th but not 4TH... I don't understand that at all...
Maybe more experienced Gen4 Drivers will know more...
I ran the car up ramps and tried to lever the rear mount to look for wear or movement but it just moved a little bit, the top dog bone side mount is good...
So maybe the front telescopic mount is shot, the car has 150K klm...
Testing 'engine rock' by loading the motor in ger with the clutch, while stationary, showed no sign of 'bad' rocking... I would have thought the mounts were ok... but the lever does rock a LOT in 5Th gear (but not in 4TH) ((strange))
Is this a common problem, jumping out of fifth or rocking lever...??
Haven't had problem like yours before, but I would suggest check the linkages on the transmission itself. If it is the mount, probably would have affect all gears not just 5th. Might even be the shift selector assembly on top of the transmission.
UPDATE:
you know when I first got this car. I posted the question about the gear lever rocking to a Camry Forum and was told it was normal. 'they all do it'...
When in fact up to 4Th gear my lever doesn't move at all...
I now believe that advice was wrong!!
Gotta watch internet experts...
Taking the console cover off the gear lever and exposing the linkages
showed the 'inner' selector cable moving in and out in 5Th gear only...
with power 'on' the inner linkage tried to dis-engage gear
and pull the other way (back in) on de-acelleration.
So the problem is most likely internal gearbox on the selectors ...
Something is allowing 'power' to push the selector out of 5TH
If anyone has had a manual box motor 1MZ 99 model gen4 to pieces and knows what is going on ... then I'd appreciate your view..
Otherwise I'll seek out a gearbox speciaist and see what they say...
it should be cut and dry because the problem is so specific...
I remember correctly that there are dents (detent) on the gear selector rods inside the trans which travel past a spring loaded ball bearing to hold it in place. Check that spring. The dent and ball is polished and hardened steel, so it should not wear out.

Yes I think you are right, it would be something like that...
Now i am wondering if it is possible to get to that section of the box
without having to remove from motor...
I hope sp, sometime the selectors are 'on top' of the box or kind of near the outside...
Thanks Hajo,
Are u saying this 'bolt' is adjustablr or that it comes loose or is maybe not 'in' properly...
I sit easy to 'find' or 'identify'...
maybe some detail if you know what I mean...'bolt'...
Sounds interesting, I hope u are onto it
my latest theory is that the cable is out of adjustment and that the selector is not going all the way... noot fully in gear in the first place...
I will report back.
Thanks Hajo,
I think I found the bolt, on top next to the breather...
But no sign of spring or ball or hole or indent...
The bolt had a norrow stub on the bottom... is that the right bolt I wonder...
Thanks if you know more...
Thanks Echo, but that link will not open for me...
even after it downloaded...
Anyone with experience with 5Th gear indent spring and ball or whatever...
The bolt on top of the box reveals the sliding selector shaft but no sign of any locking device...
I'm sure the detent mechanism is the issue, it doesn't 'lock' into gear...
The other 4 gears are fine...
I may have to just go by mental imagination and start removing the cover on the selector input area... and see what I find...
Maybe someone has manual gearbox experience or is able to look on gearbox diagram were the 5Th gear indent is...
Hey thanks again...
your info was good and Mike was genuine allso, but the thing is my main PC is 'down' and my lappy only had 200Mg of spare disk and not enough to download Acrobat reader to translate PDF files...
What I really needed was advice on the dentent arrangement for 5TH gear, it is a very specific question... not references were I could find the answer... maybe forum members thought I was being lazy... no just the opposite I am trying to fix the problem myself...
It would not take much to provide the info I need, if my PC was working I'd find the info in about half a second ...
But listenn thank and I appreciate what you tryied to do... I know lots of theses forun questions are just a joke.
