1995 Camry radio antenna

On my mom's '95 Camry wagon, the antenna for the radio is not coming down all the way. It's been getting stuck for a while, so I used some WD-40 b/c I thought that it was just rusting & that's been the temporary solution & it keeps getting stuck. Does anyone have any experience w/this? Do I need to replace the motor or could it be the cold. Let me know if there is anything that I can get to stop it from doing this, I just want to treat it now before it becomes a bigger issue.

WD-40 is only a temporary solution. I recommend to take out the whole antenna setup and take as much of the antenna apart as possible so you can clean off the tracks. Once that is done, liberally apply some white lithium grease to the tracks. Put the setup back together, put it back on the car and operate it a few times to get the grease in every crevice. This should do the trick.

Having the same problem with my '95 V6 Camry. The next step is to remove the antenna assembly and look for any stray pieces and then apply lubricant.

I have a suspicion that in my case it may be a faulty radio, as it works perfectly sometimes. Looking at installing a Sony CDX GT630UI from Crutchfield.

I'll be glad when I move on to a car without a mechanical antenna.

What do you mean "stray pieces," well, I still have the stock radio in there so I hope that it isn't bad, (I really don't feel like changing it). Well, I am probably going to try & take it apart this Monday or the following Monday b/c the weather is bad over here, unless it clears up over here. But there is a diagram of the assembly on CamryStuff so I won't be totally lost. I'll keep you all posted, thanks.

I have not opened the unit yet, but I am told it is possible that pieces of the cable may have broken off and might cause the wind/un-wind process to be interfered with.

It's normal for the mast sections to stick a bit in cold weather, condensation/frost/ice plus accumulated dirt particles will prevent complete retraction, as there is very little clearance around the sections. WD40 will actually hold dirt and make the situation worse. With the mast fully up, get some radio contact spray cleaner and soak the mast, using a rag to wipe it off as you go. When thoroughly clean, spray it down with silicone lubricant. If this doesn't help, then try disassembly and cleaning/lithium grease on the internal parts. If it goes up OK, the toothed plastic flex drive is fine.

After performing poorer and poorer over time, the antenna finally will not move at all. It is stuck about 3-4 inches from the fully closed position.

Does this indicate a faulty "antenna control relay"? It is about $103 from the dealer.

Why would you think it's the relay? Have you looked inside the casing yet? I'll bet there's a broken piece fouling up the mechanism, a worn/stripped gear(s), or worn-out motor. You need to do some diagnostics and post back with results. Electrical stuff like relays usually just quits, it doesn't 'fade away'.

+1 for mechanical wear. check out my thread here. you can see were i had some wear on one of the gears causing the antenna not to deploy correctly.
