3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have v6 camry '97. I replaced the cat with a highflow, removed the resonator and put 2 "freeflow" universal mufflers in the back for the dual exhaust look.
sounds great when getting on the gas, but the droning is enough to drive a person crazy.
What would you recommend for a performance resonator and/or performance mufflers?
I still want the aggressive tone, but quiet(er) everyday in town driving.
theres not alot you can do. you could put another resonator in but that really wont make it better just quieter. the V6 camrys just drone alot...it sucks. one way to do it is the dynomat the trunk and area around the back seat. it will help to reduce the resonance.
Like bigbird said, you could just dynamat your car. May i suggest the whole cabin to block out as much noise as possible from the engine, tyre, wind noises e.t.c.....If you have a sound system, it'll sound much better as well.
P.s. Dynamat is like sound suppressing mats you can buy from most auto stores. It's got an adhesive side so you can stick it on the floor, boot, doors e.t.c.
yea that sounds like an awful lot of work. i think i will put a performance resonator on and replace the mufflers with perhaps turbo mufflers? How do those vary from free flow universal?
i got the magnaflow and it doesnt drone that bad.. i got stock cat, and the stock piping from the cat to the resonator and then new 2.25 inch from the resonator to the magnaflow... only drones on acceleration and drons around 2k to about 2850 rpms.. pretty subtle while cruising in the city at around 43mph keeps the rpms around 1500 ish rpm...

once you change out that stock cat to a hi flow youll hate your life. i did mine (2.2)from the cat back with a hiflow cat, 2.25 pipe straight out to my free flowing straight thru muffler... it sucked so hard i wanted to shove blankets in the pipe to quiet it down. (not to mention suddenly every civic guy in town wanted to race...dill weeds) i added a resonator and it helped alot, but eventually ill go get a flow master or some other muff like that with no glass packing and a nice tip (heh heh maybe even a four inch echo tip like i had on my truck...roflmao)

So you're saying the high-flow cat made it considerably louder? I might decide to replace may stock one if that's the case.
in my case my original was partially stopped up from 130000 or so miles, and when i had mine changed they upsized my pipe a quarter inch. in my case i have an ebay special muffler that is single in with dual tips and has glass packed innards but is straight thru. mine went from a nice mellow tone to sounding very raspy, rattly, and sounded like the exhaust went thru a coffee can half full of bbs. and it droned so loud in the car and made stuff rattle almost as bad as my subs that it gave me head aches, thats from idle to slow accel up to about 4500 rpm, even a fast accel was nasty sounding. it made the windows in my house rattle and my car port humm. and as i said above every civic in town suddenly noticed my car and wanted to race. i went back and had a resonator put in, it is still louder then before the change, but is now more mellow again not sharp and nasty.. i have a before vid ill try and get an after vid and post em.

+1, It evene sounds louder once you free up the manifold My car is louder than m y friends Mustang! I went in a tunnel with him on the side while flooring it, he was like "What the hell was that!"
Well, I have decided to have another resonator put back on. And I'm going to replace the mufflers with a turbo muffler. I hear they sound aggressive, but still relatively quiet. I miss the quiet ride, but gotta love the extra get up.
be sure and update with what type of turbo you get and all...i had a thrush turbo on mine before i got the one i have now, it sounded nice and probably would be perfect for the setup i have now, but it was to quiet with the stock exhaust in place...i put it on the wifes hhr and it sounds nice
