It is the housing for coolant that sits on top of the engine near the strut mount. There were two electrical parts on it, one of which I broke off...see pics. What is it and do I need it?
any help is appreciated. There was a spring inside of it, and some funky liquidy substance.

i would venture a guess that it's a temperature sensor, but can't imagine why there would be a spring inside of it. the only thing going thru there is coolant.
if you go to a dealer though, they ought to be able to ID it visually in the parts DVD, and you can go from there.

first off, thanks for your help. I have the big stuff done of my build, now im just getting the kinks worked out.
second. around the base of the "sensor" is a bunch of numbers. I will start with D (which im assuming stands for denso) and continue on. D206193s(A)(looks like a clock) underlined parts are the flat sides. spaces separate different sides.

Best bet is to drill out the brass part. You can do this by stepping up the drill bit size CAREFULLY. Start with a bit thats slightly bigger than the hole in the middle. Drill it out and move to the next size. Once most of the brass is removed, you can probably break it out in pieces. Seems like you might be able to break it(the brass part) by using whats left sticking out. Try a pair of needle nose vice grips.
I believe it is a coolant temp switch, not the temp sensor (the temp sensor is on the left in the picture). The information I have only covers up to 1996 1MZ-FE, the temp switches-1 and 2 are in a different location on the earlier engine.
shoot. should I upload some more pics or something? I'm probably going to have a spare 1mzfe chilling around, but if I don't then I will have to replace it.

The broken part should be easy to remove with an extractor.
The sensor next to it is the Engine Coolant Temp sensor for the fuel control system. The broken one is for the gauge. The coolant fan switch is at the other end of the intake manifold. The coolant temp switch for the A/C system is at the bottom of the radiator.
Even if you are putting in an aftermarket gauge, you still need to have a place to install the sending unit. Does the instruction tell you where you should be putting the sending unit?
