Car stalled when put into gear. possible transmission issue?

My car just stalled at a stop sign tonight.

I've barely had a chance to look at it since it's cold outside, but these are the things i noticed.

Car starts fine, and runs fine in Park or Neutral. Engine's fine.

I was trying to get my car started again after stalling at the stop sign and noticed that right after I get it into gear, the car stalls again and again. After about 4 tries of trying to move my car, I rev'd the engine a bit, and put it into gear while in sleightly higher rpm than idle, maybe about 900rpm to 1000rpm. I was able to drive back home afterwards.
I'm not sure if this is related to the first problem, but at home I was parking my car, and noticed a clicking noise from the hood. I haven't had a chance to check where in the hood the noise comes from. The clicking seems to continue until I put the car in Park or Neutral, but as soon as I put car in gear, drive or reverse, the clicking noise is there again.

Does this sound like transmission issues?

98 camry 6 cylinder automatic.

It may be that your lock-up clutch on the torque converter is not releasing due to a stuck lock-up solenoid, so you end up getting an immediate stall when you shift away from park or neutral. That's probably the only thing in the trans that would cause an immediate stall like this.

Yea,.. I agree with davemac2, I heard of this before, except it was a 1992 chev cavalier, but it was the lock-up clutch in the torque converter staying locked.
