Question 2000 Camry Idling Hot

My 2000 camry 4 cylinder coolant temp gauge will read pretty high (3/4 of max) when vehicle is allowed to idle for very long. Yesterday it was doing this at 40 degrees F ambient. If I rev the engine up to a steady 1500 rpm or so, the coolant temp immediately begins to return to normal. Same thing if I put it in gear and drive away. Any ideas, anyone?

i just fixed this problem today. is the fan behind the radiator working? it should turn on and off by itself once in a while when the engine is too hot. check your coolant and everything that goes to the radiator(pipes, tubes)

Check to see if your thermostat is working and if your fans turn on. If it overheats on you while you're driving turn up the heater.

This may also be caused by a crack in your radiator. Check for coolant leaks or any possible failure spot on your radiator.

I forgot to mention that the coolant level is good.

If the radiator fan were the problem, then I can't see how revving the engine while the vehicle is stationary would make the coolant temp come back down, as the fan is thermostatically controlled/electric.

There is no coolant leak anywhere. I'm am beginning to wonder if perhaps the water pump has a bad impeller, i.e. missing a blade or blades. Has anyone see this happen before?
