larger steel rim wheel 97 camry

i noticed a few threads asking about wheel and tire sizes, but i have a similar question. instead of buying a set of aftermarket wheels and tires, how about getting either 17" or 18" steel rim wheels with a set of good to nice tires? i have an 97 camry with the I4 and kinda want to keep the stock look for a low profile. i realize having a larger steel wheel will be heavier, but the difference in weight shouldn't really be that much. my first preference would be 17s on 215/45/17 tires. what do you think?

thanks to chrysler, there are plenty of 17" steelies floating around. tons of guys are taking their base magnums, 300's, and chargers and ditching the steelies. weight will be fairly heavy but im not sure exactly how much. i believe the wheel size is 17x7 but im not sure of the offset, so youll have to find that out for sure. oh and IIRC, they are also 5x4.5 or 5x114. personally i think it would be an interesting look...performance wise they would be heavier but lets face it, unless your racing, i cant see it being a big deal.

I was planning to do the same thing. You can find them as bigbird mentioned or some tire shops carry them. But find out what there offset is!!! And the size that you mentioned is good. The weight should not be bad, its not like your going dunks. The only hard part will be finding hubcaps that looks OEM

what about 16" steel toyota rims off the new camrys?

camry hubcaps too, so it'll look fairly stock.

How recent are your shocks (struts)? More unsprung weight, coupled with tired struts and low profile tires = lots of wheel hop, lousy ride and worse handling.

To get the bigger wheel/tire to do something positive for handling, you need a strut and spring that can keep it on pavement after a bump. Just slapping big wheels on an old car gets you nothing good.
