4th Generation Rubber burning smell when idling with defrost

I have noticed a rubber burning smell while I idle and have the defrost on. Every now and then, I hear a belt squeel or will see smoke coming from the right side of the hood. The auto repair shop says it is my heating core. Anyone have any input or info? I seem to think it is just a belt.

Thanks

you don't mention the year of your vehicle. If the A/C is coming on in defrost mode, it may be the A/C compressor is siezing and causing the serpentine belt to slip/burn? Open the hood and check it.

Sorry. It's a 2000 XLE V6. What can be done to fix this problem if that what it is?

Find the AC compressor, should look like the photo below:

When the problem returns watch and listen at the pulley area.

if that is what it is, you will need a new a/c compressor probably. $$$ unfortunately. it might be a slipping a/c clutch though too. who knows. To get rid of the burning smell for now, you can maybe remove the a/c fuse. That would at least confirm or disqualify the a/c as the source.

Sounds like an ac compressor about to seize or partially seized. I would unplug the connector to the compressor clutch and see if the sound and smell goes away.
